Exclamation I need some soldering tips

Since the title pretty much says it all, I need some tips. But first, there are some things you should know. I can solder pretty well now, but I'm afraid the solder I'm using is crappy. I was soldering my Black wire from my batterys to my board on my G35 a few days ago (since its broken) and I got it on really well. But, I started driving it a few hours later (after the solder cooled down) and the solder broke off! Is it the solder I'm using? The solder I"m using is some stuff I bought from Harbor Freight, which I know isn't the best place to buy solder, but its where I bought my soldering iron. The solder stuff says its made for electrical on RC cars. It says it has a "special" inner core which isn't metal, but its silverish. When I put the soldering iron up to it, it melts before the metal around it melts. I think its the reason why the solder keeps breaking off. I'm thinking it doesn't bond to the metal (around the core) very well, so I'm wondering if its just the solder, or my soldering skills. Do you have any ideas? Do I just buy some different solder? If so, where? What brand? Please, help me if you can.

use rosin core or silver solder. and tin the ends of your wires then use the iron to melt them together. works great!

ok, I think that its rosin core, bit I'm not sure, since I threw away the wrapper . But.... what does tinning the ends mean? I mean, like how do you do it, and what does it do/what is it? And where should I buy it? I was thinkin about just goin to radioshack and getting some, but where do you buy yours?

tinning is where you put some solder on the ends of the wire before soldering. it makes it much BETTER. I use rosin core. BUT, rosin core is the one that melts real easy under high heat. so use silver.

One thing, plug your soldering iron in and go do something else for awhile. It should melt the solder pretty much as soon as it touches the board. Sounds like you are using flux core. It also sounds like you might have to much flux. Some people also refer to tinning as putting some solder on the ireon before you solder. This creates a thermal bridge ( helps transfer heat from the iron to the suface)

with the advent of rosin core the flux core is all but dead and gone.
not too many people use it anymore.
most of the people that flux, do it by adding it manually.

tinning the wire is exactly as f150 suggested.
you heat the wire as if it were a desoldering braid and melt a bit of solder on it to help the heat transition to the new contact.

most of the time when you tin the iron before contact you burn away all of the rosin before it can be effective.
