XCrawer - Version 1.5.0
Alrighty then....I figured if I have some motivation for this project, I'd post it up. And now that a Brand New XMod Street is up for grabs, I think I have my motivation. BTW, thanks to all who made this December COTM possible - it's very generous of those who got the prizes going. They should yield some amazing entries.
So, here it is. The XCrawler is getting revamped. I have taken several ideas from myself as well as others and formed an overall plan of how I want this to turn out. I figured the most important things that need changing are: ---Articulation. This really kills the performance of the crawler, IMO, so it needs fixed. I want to use a three-link setup on the 1.5.0. You'll see. ---Transmission. The HS-55 worked well for about 8 months. The motor is just too small to be put under the conditions of crawling. I plan on a larger motor geared down so the 1.5.0 has speed as well as torque. ---Steering. The stock steering was terrible. It had no power or steering angle. A Hitec servo should take care of that. ---Tires. I'm staying with the Aoshimas, but adding a little something. It should improve traction and keep the truck's center of gravity low. Keep in mind that this is the XCrawler 1.5.0. I need to finish it in 13 days. That includes chassis and some sick paintwork. The XCrawler 2.0.0 has radical plans. *cough* Berg axles *cough* These pics are the beginnings of the project. By no means take these at the final plan. Stay tuned for updates. -Lancer

So far so good!
As for the tires traction improving and low COG, Have you thought about adding some tungsten weight into your Aoshima's? I've seen someone on scale4x4 doing so. Anyways good luck! |

use BB's for the weights in the tires, they work great, they always roll to the bottom keep the weight constantly at the bottom of the tire where its needed most.
looks great! |

Thanks!
I'm thinking about four wheel steer. I have devised a method of having 4WS and stock electronics, so that makes things all the much easier. I'll see how difficult my current plans are, and then see if I can incorporate 4WS. By Berg Axles....they will be a little larger than 1/28. Stay tuned for transmission updates tonight! -LM

Got back from the hobby store.
A little how-to on making a transmission: Start out with a motor of your choice, square styrene, CA glue, and all your tools. First, cut two lengths of the styrene. Next, cut out the top of the styrene and drill two holes that match the holes on the motor. Cut some XMod screws so they don't interfere with the motor's armature. Put it all together: And now it's on to the gears. Part II comes later. Also, I realized I can't work 4WS into this in 11 days. I would need whole new front end for an XTruck for the steering to function, and I just can't work that out. Sorry. -LM

Sporting some blingage:
Here's what I've done on the chassis. A little change in plans to finish in time for the comp. Don't mind that hack job; I took these pictures when I was experimenting, and it looks like I'll be staying with this for right now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeCxhMKTyWY It works. -LM EDIT: And a little group shot. A little hint to the progress of somebodies GTR. EDIT - Again.... That should keep you all guessing until it's painted. Muhahahaha.... Happy Hollidays from Nevada! -Lancer

What triagulates the rear axle section? Looks like you just have the two chassis extensions side by side and then the drive shaft. Got any way to solve it from just shimmyin' side ways?
That and no more articulation that way..? Never-the-less, the truck looks amazing, defenatly diggin' the paint work.
