Out of the box the evo is faster, has more responsive steering and a lower center of gravity. It is more enclosed keeping dirt and debris out of the areas you don't want it.
The gen1 is a better platform for the extreme modding and scratch building. Nowadays both generations' parts are a bit hard to come by at a reasonable price, so it is really up to your personal preference. |

Gen1. Much more easily moddable, easy to make very custom. Lighter once you go alloy, and much cooler.

I prefer evo just because they are easier to work with on a day to day basis - but would agree 100% that gen1's are the way to go if you want to get crazy!

Gen1 all the way. Easier to mod the chassis, and for some reason I found them slightly more durable(never broke a gen1 part while driving it).
They also look better if you add aluminum parts. With a gen1, it looks great. With an evo, it's just a driving metal brick, no big deal. |

To change the diff on an Evo, you take the whole car apart. And putting it back together is worse. For a gen one, it's drop the screws on the bottom the ones on the decks, then pull it apart. Done. Evo it's like take this, this, this, this off; take these screws out, pull it out, change it, *somehow* get the lower arms to stay put when putting them in, reverse from here. It's much easier to make a MC-T/Xmod monster out a Gen1, and they are much, much faster when done right.

And don't get me started on the whining gear train. You have to spend $30 on stuff to get it to stop winding. Gen1 is just great from the factory. Gen1's are cooler, they're old school and almost killed Rob's dog.

I personally like the Gen 1 more, I think they are easier to work with. But, I also started out with one. I didn't get an EVO until after a year of owning my Gen 1.
They both have their ups and downs, it depends on what you want. |

I've mostly run the Gen 1 since 2004 and feel pretty confident in hanging with any Evo chassis. During our Xmods of Tulsa races, we run a mix of both chassis' and sometimes its difficult for either chassis to pull away and leave the other.
Last weekend, during our last race, my Gen 1 held the lead against 2 experienced drivers with their Evo's. None of the cars were running anything but regular setups (No lithiums). I'll totally give it to the Evo's that the cars are quicker off the line, but the Gen 1's seem to be smoother entering and exiting the corners. Thats were the Gen 1's seem to equal-out in performance during a road course race.
