Default Project: AWD 4WS 1991 Prelude

So, as some may already know, I'm designing a AWD 4WS Xmod.
And now I'm making a thread for it so I'm not posting all over the place about it.

I've already chosen which body I plan on using, a 1991 Honda Prelude.
Now I just need to find something to make the body out of.

I'm currently working on the chassis, but I'm thinking the chassis design is going to depend a bit on the electronics.

So I'm wondering what people suggest for an electronics board, servo (or in this case 2 servos), power supply, etc.

For a proof of concept I'd probably just go with an XMOD board with stacked steering FET's, I'm assuming you will want to run both servo's off one board just swap the wires, I know the servo motors don't draw much current but all the same I'd stack the FET's just to play it safe....

You mean make one using an Xmod board and the 2nd using other electronics?

DO you have the model body, somthing. Anyways I hate when people start a project thread before they have anything to even get a pic up of. I love the project threads here, they are usually very good. I suggest wait until you get the body or somthing before you start the project thread. If you start it because you need info, you can get that info from others on threads that pertain to your build. I can't wait to see your project come to together.

I'm drawing up the chassis on paper, but I'm finding that I can't know exactly what the chassis needs to be like because I'm unsure what the electronics will be like.

Should I figure out the electronics and build the chassis around that? Or just build the chassis and worry about what electronics go in it afterward?

As for the body, I'm looking at the Fujimi 1991 Honda Prelude model kit.
Why the '91 Prelude? It had optional 4WS.

think which parts youll be using.
AWS means knuckles on both front/rear that steer, also using a shaft to drive all 4 wheels (AWD). complicated on an Xmod but im sure it could be done. With that being said, get these parts together and then hit the drawing board to design your chassis around this first. Then once you have it all figured out, then plan the elctronics onto it. This prob means using other electronics then RS crap. Better off using a micro ESC, servo, etc...

Currently I'm trying to design the chassis using the RS electronics, but I'm getting some problems getting it all to fit! Those servos are too big!
I'll probably just give up on that and just make a chassis like you said and worry about electronics later.

Also I'm have a problem with the Bevel Gear being where the tie rod needs to be. XD

Cant wait to see this one. I had a chance to buy a 4WS prelude a few years ago but I passed it up... I wish I would have bought it

DON't do that, you should be building your chassis around whats going to be in it not the other way around.

Ok, well then I guess I should figure out my electronics first.

Well I guess I should make a list of parts I need...
2 Front axles
2 Sets of front dogbones
1 Differential
1 Xmod Servo

That's all I can think of for now.

Also, TripleXmodder, what's a good tool to cut the dvd case with? Everything I use that can cut it isn't precise enough, and everything that would be precise enough just can't cut it...

IMO Thats what I'll be using, I use it for cutting any custom parts that is a pain to do with an X-acto.

I agree, measure off what you're going to cut and use the cutting wheel instead of continuously cutting over and over and over till you're through... Use the Xacto knife to clean the mess of the dremel if anything.

Also remember that you couldwire HS-55's or other smaller servos to the board to save weight and space, plus they come with long arms/blades as attachments... perhaps letting you mount it higher or elsewhere

I'm thinking about using non Xmod electronics, but I don't know the dimensions of them. Also, I'm worried about money and soldering just so everyone knows. XD
