Default atomic chili motor

ok, so my brother in law bought a chili motor and a V2 board. somehow he hooked up something wrong and the motor smoked. he thought that it was totally fried so he said i could have it. i attached wires to it and it still runs. so the problem- on my speed checker it reads the same as a stage 2 motor and i hooked it to a car that does not have the "required" 2x2 stack fet's. so is it gone or do i just need the upgrade? and if i do a stack, would a stage 2 be the same?

1. You blew some FETS.

2. Stage 2 will be same, the FETS just allow more current to be drawn by your motor. Stage 2 no use big currents. It the 56 Turn Army

Hmm. Well.. In my opinion it wont raise the top speed even if you have a 2x2 of stacked FETs. Fets can add some punch, but not really top speed. (I did an experiment on this once).

Did anyone flip the motor brushes? That is required on the Chili motor.

The chilli motor got burnt up if the motor smoked. I'm not a motor expert so I don't know what actually burnt up in the motor. I do know the motor will still run just not as fast.

Now on to the chilli in a stock FET xmod. A chilli motor requires a FET stack because it draws more current and will burn the FETs on your evo. It may not burn them since the motor it self is burnt up.

You need atleast a 2x2 fet stack to run a chilli motor safely. And FET stack WILL increase top speed, otherwise what's the point.

Go to atomicmods.com and look for their customer service #, call them and go to tech support. You will talk to Frank, he is an expert and will have a perfect answer for you.

fets do help the top speed of a motor. even with a stage 2 you should notice a little gain, but mainly you will notice a gain with higher current motors. Fets are what determines the current going from the batteries to the motor. A better fet has less internal resistance allowing more current to flow, and to flow better. Think of a fet as a dam gate. you have a small opening in the ****, even at full wide open not as much will flow as a opening of a larger diameter at wide open.
upgrade fets allow us to run hotter motors because of this reason. a stock fet trying to run the chili will heat up internally and cause a fet to blow, usually smoke rolls, sometimes will catch on fire, etc. a fet upgrade of a 2x2 stack is minimal on an evo to run the chili. but once again, like the dam, put another fet giving you a 2x3 stack and you will run more efficiently, and cooler on the fets.

well, open up the chili motor and examine the arm, the brushes, and your bearings. if your arm has a glazed over comm, you'll have to polish your comm. get some 1000 grit and just get the glaze off. if the brushes are flipped wrong, it'll retard ther timing and make the motor slowerr and run hotter. so you probably want to check that too.

Look, when I said FETs don't increase top speed, I also said I did a test to get those results because I had the same question.

I tested a 180 size motor with stock Xmod FETs and then top of the line 2x2 of 8858 FETs, the top speed did not change on the speed checker, same results with 180 motor and lithium.

Whats the point you ask tripleXXXmodder,? To be able to run higher amp motors. FETs are more like injectors to real cars. Big injectors in a car don't produce any more power. I put bigger injectors in my car SO that it could handle a bigger turbo. The bigger turbo made more power.

The internal on resistance would be lower, that would make a difference to a degree, but many mini-z enthusiasts agree that only punch is noticeable. Unlike here, on minizracer, its all about competition. They test and test this stuff because they are trying to gain an advantage over one another on the track. The consensus remains the same, FETs allow you to run hotter motors and can increase punch. Top speed gains is minimal to nonexistent.

If anyone would like me to redo the test and create a thread on the difference in top speed between stock and stacked FETs with different motors on a speed checker, I'd be happy to. We can argue results all day. I'm willing to take a stock car, test its top speed one the speed checker with various motors, slap a 2x2 on the car and then try the same motors and record the difference. This is a real life test I've done before, and I'm willing to do it again in a thread and post results.

Don't get offended. Perhaps your right. But you can't run a chilli with full throttle on stock FETs without burning up. So stacking the FETs will allow you to run at full throttle. ie: higher speed in those regards, Where it may do little difference in the motor capable top speed it will increase the capable top speed of the car.

A thread with your tests would be awsome, not to prove anything to me but just in general... I say do it because threads like those are a great benefit.

Hey all, I am the idiot Brother in law . This is why I shouldn't do soldering work late at night while half asleep. It ran great on the v2 board (and yeah, I flipped the brushes), but for some reason my throttle/reverse was backwards when I ran it, which lead to me re-soldering some connections, and the eventual death rattle of the motor.

I blame it all on BnR34 though, because I took his advice on soldering the connections to an 'easier' spot on the v2 board

I will say that the chili was a great little motor running on the v2 with a 7.4v lipo pack. I should have left it alone!

I posted the thread tutorial for the "easier solder points" and probably started that trend.... So blame me. You said it all.. Late at night and half asleep, don't bash the method. The tiny spots were designed for the small Gen1 wire and not for the large wire from an evo. They are huge compared to the little spots,.. How'd you screw that up... Lol. I hope you can refurbish the chilli. So sad.

ALWAYS test with a multi-meter before hooking the power up. It will save you from these horrible tradgies.

Heh, not bashing the method the spots were much easier, I just think I either confused my positive and negative wires from the power supply, or some other similarly stupid move. Hes my bro though, so hes easy to blame

Not too sad for it though, it will live again and possibly faster than it originally was.

he's statched up the can, and ey BD, did you snatch up the armature too? because if you did, i'd like to cut an extra 2 bucks off the price you pay for the 33t i just finished for you if you want to use it as part of the payment. i've never seen a chili arm in person in my entire life

It's probably going to go into my saleen s7 once the board gets it's stacks done but the chassis is the all blue alloy one with awd. So I can turn this one into a bit of a beast with that motor.

And I did get the armature and it is yours as I have no need for it. But it did get burned up pretty bad but the communicator looks good but the wire on the armature is done. Still spins when in the motor but its nowhere near as fast anymore, probably about a stage 2 or less. You will see when you get it and it is nothing special to look at, looks like a armature from a rs motor.
