Default Drive gear goes on the Audi

well its been about a month since i lost drive on my car, just messin around in the driveway, and then bam, gone no more drive BUT i have every other gear(reverse, park, neutral). so now im on the way of taking out the trans in my drive way. heres how far ive got so far.

on the lovely jack stands.

cut the exhaust was way easier then dealing with all the rusted bolts and what not. just gonna cupple it back on when im done.

front driveshafts have to be unbolted due to the trans being one giant piece.

trans pan.

and the back half of the trans.
next steps are to remove cover plate, unbolt drive shafts, and thenunbolot everything else and lower the trans.

audis are a 50 50 shot. they can be super reliable if their maintnence was kept up top notch. but if it was slipped on just a little bit, they can be the most troublesome cars ever.

Germans are notoriously over engineered and expensive to fix, for the past 20-30 years since they decided they were going to get all fancy with technology.

That, and I don't think he's worked on cars much at all unlike you and me..

ahh thanks guys thats some good info ima have to remember. and yup tex is right havent really worked on cars that much, just all the simple crap belts batteries, oil change and the tune up stuff,(mainly at school, tech high,) and a non used motor rebuild too freshmen year(all it was, was a tear down paint clean and put back together really). also alittle bit of shocks and brakes at home.
im not gonna be rebuilding this thing probably gonna send it out for that, since i have no trans experience and dont feel like ruining this thing further. so all i really have to do, is take it out and put it back in after rebuild.

Actually it's not all German cars that have trans problems.
In the past I had a 90's Gen Audi A6 avant (your car, renamed), with the 2.8L 170 HP V-6 and the auto trans. The V6 sounds good on paper but it gave seriously slow acceleration times (heavy wagon, around 10+ seconds to 60...)

That trans, in that car, is just horrible. I don't remember the exact make/model but it's also used in one of the older VW Passats. The trans in mine leaked, slipped and smoked; that and the car = pain.

Good luck with your project and fix.

yea ive got the 92 avant they changed the name 4 years later in 92 i believe, anyhow, yea thats the set up i have and its rated at like 11 seconds 0-60, which i dont like at all, alittle slow for my taste. and if my car ends up like yours, bye bye car. all i can say, bought it cheep can get ride of it cheaper, if my gf lets me...oh and the parents... and yea thanks ima need some luck on this.

Even with my firebird's 140 hp (probably down close to 100 after 20 years and 270k miles) it was stupid fun in the dirt. Could pull some mean dirt drifts in that sucker all day long until your lungs were browned from the dirt.

AWD would be a joy off road.
