Default Advice on building a rock crawler

Hello everyone! I am new to the site, seems like I a lot of great people here. Hopefully I can get lots of help and advice on building a rock crawler. I have a bone stock Xmod hummer. Trying to find a lift kit is nearly impossible, is it really necessary to have? Next, how would you modd the studs to extend for a wider wheel or tire? Any other recommendation would be appreciated.

I understand your frustration with the lift kit. unfortunately for a decent crawler you'll need it. I'm looking for one to. In regards to the bigger wheels. By studs you mean the axle that the wheel attaches to right?

If so here is an example of what I did,
It needs bigger wheels and the lift kit But It has the wide axles. For the ability to have the huge tires.

with the body on...

Top down view without the body.....

The wide axle itself..........

hope thats what you were lookin for.
If so tell me and i will xplain how i did that.

Thanks for the link. Seems easy enough. Wish someone could make a piece that can screw over the old part, that would be real cool.

i made it for under $75 not counting the chassis (lol i paid $25 for it)

but its pretty cool imo
mods:
-neo mags in stage 1 can
-lift kit
-urathane super swampers
and a custom body

it does not have a wide axle kit, and does fine without one

My attempt at a rock crawler:

It had excellent traction and handling, unfortunately it kept running off whenever I tried to get the antennae up its arse, making it very hard to control. Don't even ask how I got the AAA's in.

Seriously though, good luck on your project, I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Nice wheels, who makes them and what did you do for your axles?

The axles are doubled up. I took 4 extra axles and carefully superglued them to the existing ones to make the stance wider. The wheels and tires are from a lego set. I took the lego rim, dremeled it out so that an Xmods slammed wheel can fit in the inside, superglued the Xmods wheel in place and primered/painted them chrome.

The offroad kit is not required but really helps out when crawling, another mod you might look into is the articulation mod. Basically all this does is that it trims the limiter that prevents the rear from rotating all the way. When you do this you get more articulation. Also not that the larger the tires the higher the body lift in order to keep the articulation going.

hmmm seems to have turned into a pic gallery

the key to a crawler is given away by the name ....so any stock type motor isnt going to cut it ,you need slow and torquay anything else is a mud truck not a crawler
the most common option for drive is a servo converted to rotate 360*

then move onto articulation big GRIPPY tyres and body lift

hope that helps

hahaha i am still laughing lol.

But like reaper said its mainly about torque and overall power. I know triplexmodder sells the extended axles.
