Default 1/35 Unimog Project

I didn't know where to post this one since there's no designated section for other scale projects - if it's in the wrong section can a Mod please move it to the right one - Thanks.

Ok, I've been working on this little project of mine for a a few days now, it's a 1/35 model Unimog. It's only going to be RWD but it's got a pretty powerfull geared motor for that rear axle. This one is kind of an experimental proto-type (being that it's my 1st in this scale) so eventually i'll be making it 4WD as soon as I customize and fabricate a FWD axle to go along with the rear. The geared motor that i'm using will allow me to put in a longer shaft so that it can also transfer power to the front aswell.

Anyways, here's the pics of it so far:

The last pic is just a mock up of it to show the lenght and size.
More to come soon.

Thanks guys!

I forgot ot mention that the rear axle is made from one piece of Aluminum sheet and it's using a worm gear and spur set-up; For the front i'm using 2 spare mini-z wheel hubs plus 2 xmods med.soft gen1 springs - it's all set up on a custom 2 part aluminum axles piece. The steering link is a ball and socket combo and the servo will be a micro-t's along with a micro-t board.

There's still alot left to do like mount the rear motor and then the electronics plus make a custom steering set up. All the other samll details will be done after those are in.

More updates to come soon.

Thanks dude! The chassis is going to be made from styrene and the model parts itself. The front part is just about complete, it's the rear section of it that will carry & conceal just about everything (it won't be that heavy either). Just to even the weight distribution i'll add a small piece of lead weight up front too.

It is smaller.
Nice use of the Micro-T board...also, while you're at it, if you have a spare xmod EVO servo motor, try that as the motor, they looked to be around the same size(not really) compared to the micro-t motors..

Unimog...sounds very cool.
And good luck!

Thanks, and yeah it's micro-t electronics but I won't be using the motor - I got a gear box w/motor that will be going into this project.

Thanks! the wheels are rubber but they are pretty soft so they have good traction.

1/35 is smaller than an xmods - this one's about half the size more or less.

Thanks! As for details - I think i'll add lights and for paint i'll probably only do a little mud splash here and ther on it and leave it green with the decals that it came with.

Thanks dude! I already have a geared motor box for it - I hope it will not tear up the gears because it's got alot of torque indeed.

Ok, just a few small updates:

I spent a few hrs last night sketching out and designing a new rear axle for this thing - I could figure out how to add the springs to the 1st - so I ended up making a entire new one that works alot better.

Here's a couple updates pics of the front and rear axles plus a mock up of the truck so far:

The next thing for me to do is make a sturdy chassis piece and add the electronics, servo and motor; Once those are in all the other minior details will follow.

More to come soon.

are those red springs for show , i dont see any thing running down the middle, and i dont see anything that might "bend" or pivot rather...do you use more than one pair of (needle nose?) pliers when you bend aluminum?

i think with that setup he is going with the whole front axle moving in the suspension as one peice, with no idepentant suspension. Im sure he's gonna give us a reason for that now! lol

LOL - I'm actually using a "see-saw" effect for the axle's suspension set-up - the front axle and the rear are both designed like that but the rear isn't quite finished yet. The springs provide the added tension for the axles to flex only side to side and not up and down - there's a screw that secures the front axle to the mount piece and it's loose enough so that it can swivel. As for the springs - they are held inplace by tension and the tip of the screws that holding this thing in place and together .

Updates - 4/19/08

I did some more work on it last night and I got the motor also. The set-up will have to be changed because I don't quite like how it looks - it's too stuck out and bulky looking - so i'll hide it completely in the back and use a couple gears to get power to the axle instead.

Here's a few pics just to show you guys what I meant and also a few flex and a size comparison pic:

After I get the the gearbox and axle gears all figured out and fixed I'll post some more updated pics.
