Good All Around Electric
Ok, I've wet my whistle on Xmods, and am looking to pick up a good hobby grade electric.
I don't care much about competing. I just want something slightly bigger than an Xmod that can drive on grass as well as on-road. I do want something that will allow me to waste my time and money upgrading it though . What suggestions might people have?

The Losi Mini-T is very fun to build, the aftermarket is vast, it's small enough to play with inside the house and big enough to play outside, it's very cheap to upgrade and the stock electronics are pretty reliable. A RTR kit starts at about $100, pitch in $25 for a lipo, $15 for an integy spur/pinion kit, and $10 for a Venom Fireball 370 motor and it'll go twice as fast as it does out of the box. If you'd like more information on Mini-T's or have any questions, I have 6 of them total and all are modified.

well for something hobby grade.. fast and fun
i say either a 1/16 slash.. or 1/16 e-revo, you can always if u want something a bit slower, but hella lot more durable, wait for the rc18t2 to come out(its 1/18, but its not THAT much of a difference) or if u want something cheap, and fun, not very fast though.. the mini-t is perfect

If it is 1/18 scale I would consider anything from Associated or Losi a Mini T, 1 because they each have TONS of aftermarket parts and 2 you cant go wrong with any because they are easy to fix and very popular and finally 3 if you pop a BL motor and some LiPos into a Mini-T the power to weight ratio is BEASTLY

Great info here. Do any of these allow for real scale bodies? Maybe something that looks like a Rally Car? For some reason, the World Rally Championships has rally cars in my head.

um.. for scale looks... only one thats somewhat scale looking is the 1/16 slash.. other than that.... nope.. ur gonna have to go with custom mounted bodies
The RC18R is kinda scalish.. and has rally related bodies... but its out of production, just wait for the rc18r2 i was referring to a stock mini-t lol... id put my rc18 up against a nitro aswell.. if it steered properly(its my servo, a normal rc18 should steer fine, i think i gave it a bit too much power).. lol

I'll probably go for the Slash or Revo look then. I can always grab the Subaru in my signature and make my Rally Car on an Xmod.

dont just look for scale looks... scale looks can be achieved with anything... i can make my rc18t look scalish with a bigger body... dont let non-scalish looks keep u down, look into performance, handling, prices.. a rc18 is A LOT cheaper than a slash or revo... so is the mini-t

I have at least one of almost every scale between 1/36-1/10(no 1/16 yet)
and my 1/10 scale rigs are about the only ones that are really efficient on any grass. I know my rc18t is useless on grass and it's 4wd(also brushless and lipo-2s-3s) I'm pretty sure you can drive pretty well on the lawn with a 1/16 mini e-revo or mini slash.

oh if u want true scale looks.. and scale speeds.. then get a scaler.. u can get up to like 10mph without having to slow down to turn.. after the 15+mph mark.. u have to slow down to turn, but let me tell ya.. they get EXPENSIVE.. lol
quite fun tbh

I would recommend either a Mini-T or my newest toy, the HPI E10 I learned last night that the E-10 is a blast to drift, and HPI makes a huge selection of bodies that fit it, everything from rally cars to muscle.

I'd recommend for extreme out of the box performance, the 1/16th Brushless Revo.
Start out with one battery, and capable of 30mph. Strap in another battery with the series connector, 50mph. Or get the parallel connector and double your run time. LiPo batteries for them are cheap. I got two 2s Lipos for $24, and two 3s Lipos for like $30-40. But, the Revo itself comes with a decent price tag.. I think they are still going for around $280 new probably. But, the out of the box performance probably has anything else beat that you will find, straight out of the box that is. |
