Default Want to buy a car...

Hi, I'm 23 and I'm looking for a car to get. I can't really afford to get a super nice car right away, but I'd like to get something older that has a lot of potential and can be fixed up nicely over time. I'd like to keep it under 5k. I live in so cal and have several tracks not too far away. Drifting looks pretty cool and fun. Is it hard? I can drive manual. Recommendations? I was looking at older BMW 3 series, but I'm not sure how good those are for souping up. Thanks.

For under 5k you may be able to find a nice used Mustang. Or possibly an older Nissan.

A Nissan 300ZX, or the Datsun would be a cool starter.

Keep it simple... Nissan 200SX - cheap, lots of upgrades available, easy to work on and great for drifting....

hmmm a car... i own a 1992 Honda Accord its fun to drive around. A 240sx is a good car. Drifting is kinda hard considering you have to use a lot of finesse(sp?) but its up to you, since your going to drive the car. Lucky i have to drive a few hours to the nearest track.

i'd say a used 240 sx
they're great for drifting and the 1996 and up models have an engine with pretty good potential: DOHC KA24DE.
it's better than the older SOHC KA24's
should run around 4000 for one that runs decent, manual, and most likely will need work.

I'll agree with the 240SX or a 300ZX. Their really nice rides stock or modified. But if you want to save up a bit, save till about 12-13k, that can get you a 93 Supra. Which is atleast true for my city, not sure about yours.

And to minimize confusion, the 240SX and S13 is the same car, just different names for the US and Japan.

Ya a 240 would be a good drifter and pretty cheap or you could go for a mustang most of the 99-04 bodystyle is pretty cheap but the 240 has cheaper mods. But make sure you put back some money for tires if your planning on drifting.

240sx's are nice but are becoming increasingly rare, now i know this may sound bias because i own a older bmw if youve done your research youll know what an e30 is, well i have a 325e and its awesome! strait six, very reliable handles GREAT, drifts... well slides occasionally but would slide much better with a m3 lsd under it and its great on gas, parts are very abundant and all the e30 guys are very down to earth not anything like the stereotyped bmw, audi or benz driver as snoody and rich. most bmw e30 drivers are on shoe string budgets or have built their ride up over time. also a plus with the e30 for drifting they have wicked steering angle to them from stock and are rear wheel drive, only weight in the neghborhood of 2400-2700 pounds and have decent power numbers, most are standard and have almost perfect gearing for drifting, and if you want to change the gearing go find your self a m3 lsd and your set to go!

well theres my two cents

oh also they can be found in alright shape for pretty cheap depending on the year and milage on the car, mine for example, has 425,258 km on it has the m20 2.7l six cyl, has 120hp with 170 flbs/tq and has a custom paint job and i could prolly get anywhere from 2000 to about 5 or 6 if i was lucky so if you can find the right one GO FORIT right away before someone else does

i would say a mustang.. for stang drifiting all that Vaughn Gittin did was some suspension and some stuff like that.... but i think the 240SX is cheaper and better for you seeing how you like imports (the BMW)

i'd get a nismo mustang, like in tokyo drift.

and drifting is very hard to learn, but after that it's just like riding a bike. at least that's what i've heard from my friends that drift.

In my opinion, Drifting is A LOT easier with a rwd car. Mustangs are good but they will fishtail a lot (unless properly tuned). A lot of Nissan cars are really good, such as 240SX, Silvia, 350Z, 300ZX etc... Also a Mazda RX-7 is good. Some of those are expensive though (such as 350Z & RX-7)

id go with one of these too, but only if you can find one thats either been redone, or still solid. these cars are known for just rusting away and needed alot of work people just junk em. cause they aren't worth the money in fixing. in school my sophomore class has an auto project motor and 4 speed swap for one of these they are a nice car over all if you can find one like i said stated above.
