Question bad batteries?

so today, a friend of mine and i set out to purchase an xmods car at one of the radioshack stores in town. they had a pretty decent deal going on; buy the xmods starter kit, get three accessories free, so we jumped on that idea quickly.

we both got the xmods evo gen scion tc, (it was the only "car" left.. the only three they had were the scion, the hummer, and the nissan titan, which didn't seem appealing at all) the racing suspension upgrade, stage 2 motor, awd, foam tires, and some crappy radioshack brand AAA batteries and the charger thing that came with them. of course, me being extremely low on money (and i don't ever really have money to begin with) i got the crap batteries instead of actually getting good name brand ones.

so i put the mods on the rc car, slapped the batteries in it, and took off. well, the car didn't really take off all that well. our main goal was to try and get a decent cheap setup for drifting around on the tile flooring in the house. well.. i think i might have developed some problems with mine. for some reason, it seems when i try to steer the car left or right, sometimes it forgets and gets all retarded and doesn't turn at all. we also noticed that the newer tie rods for the front suspension suck horribly, so we switched back to the stock tie rod (because of it throwing off the steering so bad) and solved that little issue.

but anyway. could it just be the radioshack brand batteries that are making my car act so bad? i switched out the AAAs in the car for energizer batteries, and that worked for a minute, but the 9v in the remote is still of radioshack brand. i'm completely new to the xmods scene and i'd love to get a decent setup for drifting and all-around fun.. so i'll know i didn't waste my only $40 on a model rc car of a scion.

any tips?

thanks man. i've been browsing around the forums before i decided to register, to try and see if i could find tips on how to make this ****ed little thing run a little better. but the best solution is to ask questions on my problems, right? =D

i've seen the little xmods cars in radioshack way back in the day, when they were still selling the bad *** ones, instead of the models they have now. i would have loved to get my hands on one of the skylines or supras, but unfortunately they're discontinued =[ tomorrow my buddy and i are going to roll back the rug on the floor and move the couch in the way to make room for the (hopefully) twin-drifting scions. (haha.. that sounds kinda cool)

but i need to figure out why i'm getting such poor response from the remote to the car. couldn't be the frequency because the guy at radioshack switched out the hummer frequency thinggy (the RC crystal? i guess that's what it's called) in the other scion so we could use them together. but after hours of unscrewing suspension pieces and screwing them back in, we finally gave up for the night and put them away. but tomorrow is another day, and we're gonna give them another shot at redeeming their coolness.

i know it sounds cheasy and it is but even if your running different crystals you will still get some interferance.
the problem is that the xmods crystals all run on variances of 27Mhz and the difference is too minimal for the the EP to distinguish between the two.

if you buy the crystal set and use crystals that are farther apart(1-12) it might take care of most of your troubles.
cheers,
bondo

i forgot to mention that you can test if this is the problem.
put both cars next to each other and turn them on.
turn on one controller at a time and try to control both cars.
if both cars respond to a single controller then you know you have interference problems.

cheers,

yeah, the scion definitely has a #2 crystal. and i can't buy anymore of them for difference frequencies; every radioshack has the same thing. nissan titan, hummer, scion tc, and a few parts for upgrades. a lot of the items that xmods made are retired or discontinued, it even says so on their site. so i don't really know any other place to get random parts or 3rd party parts for the xmods cars. does anyone else know of a place where i can find them? possibly cheap, please!

i'd actually prefer to have a gen 1 rather than the evo series. do you have one of the subaru impreza cars? i'd kill for one that is completely setup for drifting already. i'll trade you my scion tc for one =/

good news guys.

after reading a lot on the forums about different tweaks and things for my xmod scion, and i've learned a lot about the cars and how they work and stuff.

(it's only been about 3 days since i've had it.. stumbled upon some youtube videos of people drifting the little rc cars around, so i figured i'd hop aboard the fun train and pick one up. buddy of mine got one too, and we've been ripping up his floors with them since day one)

so far we've got a pretty decent setup for low cash solution on how to drift and get a lot of fun out of the cars. after fixing some minor problems with the both of them, (i managed to completely obliterate my steering servo the day i opened the box to mine without even knowing it.. long story) and i've been reading a few things here and there to tweak the cars up a little. so far, i'm on the hunt for 2/52 sized nuts to replace the plastic lug nuts for the wheels; seems i have stripped a few out from replacing the tires so much and so forth. i believe next up i'm going to be looking into pvc pipe wheels so i can drift around on hard concrete and stuff. shouldn't be too hard to do, right?

but i have a question. i've been reading about locking the rear differential to increase torque for the rear drive of the car, for maximum drift. but currently, i think i have a pretty decent setup so far. nothing fancy, pretty much out of the package mods. but although i've been reading about them, i wanted to ask for an opinion first so i don't go off ruining the "transmission" of the car.

should i do it? and what do you guys think would be the best way to approach it? i don't want to permanently lock the rear differential, whereas i might find some troubles and have to find another differential to throw in the rear of the car.

any ideas?
