Default And so, I step into the world of Nitro.....

I've done it now. local guy has been hassling me to buy this thing from him for a couple weeks. I caved today....my camera is dead, but here are some of the pictures he took when he bought it:

and the extra body

for those who don't know, it's a Team Associated Nitro TC3. 4WD, .15 nitro motor, pull start, 2 speed.

came with a bunch of spare parts (control arms, linkage, and the like), some fuel, glow charger, etc. it really is RTR. for $225 (well, 400 for it and a sony handycam that he was asking 175).

got home rather late tonight, and didn't want to wake the neighbors, so I haven't run it yet (although I have seen it run....I think it'll need a little tuning).

I'm already looking at what upgrades are out there, and see a few things I like, but will definitely be waiting until I get some time driving it to see what it needs. pretty sure a locked rear diff will be the first thing (for awesome rally action!).

it's got a little surface rust on the hardware. it actually looks much better now than it did when he took those pictures....

I played with it for a few minutes tonight. I can get it to run, but only by unplugging the fuel line from the tank after a couple pulls. otherwise it floods. then, once it's running, I can plug that line back in and it idles ok, but kills as soon as you gas it. I didn't want to get into tuning it at all tonight (besides, I was inside......mmmmmmmmm..........nitro fumes!!!). maybe I'll have some time tomorrow.

set the bottom LSN needle flush and the HSN flush.
get it started then move the HSN is 1/4 turn at a time after each speed run.

the bottom needle really is set for idle so once this is done no real need to touch it. Just make a pressure test on that fuel tank and seal the backplate, carb neck, etc...

yea, it's definitely running rich across the board.

I'm not sure which screw is which. or if these are even fuel jets. one goes through the fuel pickup (I'm assuming this limits the flow of fuel into the carb, making it the HSN), and there's a smaller one right next to the throttle lever, that looks like it would just adjust the idle. but maybe not.

mhm....
like i mentioned....seal it all up and lean it in a tad!
just make sure that the fuel tank is not cracked or youll have airbubbles in the line thus leaning it out alone. wouldnt hurt to have all new silicone fuel lines if you already havent.

Nice nitro
that was a big selling point! pretty slim chance the other body will get used much.

yea, closed up the larger screw by the fuel line ~1/4 turn, and it runs great. took it for a little test drive in the street sans body. pretty fun, but I didn't have the guts to get anywhere near WOT or second gear. there were some sandy spots on the pavement, and I could easily get it to step out sideways with a little throttle. way cool!!!!

Not to steel your thread, but heres a few pics of my old one.

And here it is with a new motor the OS.18

I regret geting rid of it but if you have the money to stay in it its fun as hell if you plan on changing the motor i suggest get the OS.18 it has a nice kick or just a .3 bigger motor.

In the pic (chux) the pressure line from the tank to carb is unhooked which means it would have had to have the carb set terribly rich to run at all. The screw going down into where the fuel line hooks up is the high speed needle (jet) and the one going in from the side is the low speed needle (sounds like this is where your problem is), clockwise leans and counterclockwise richens. SMALL moves make big changes.

the pressure line is hooked up now, has been ever since I got it (those are pics from when the PO first bought it....).

yep, I figured out which screw is which, got it to run pretty well.

I was having some radio issues, interference of somesort. made me real nervous to get too far away or any momentum......well, I just dropped the channel crystal into an extra Futaba 75mhz tx that I had sitting around (used to be for my boat before I swamped it and ruined the receiver and switched to 27 mhz). anyway, this seems to have fixed those issues (I'll take it outside for some real testing tomorrow.....). BUT, this has also drastically increased the servo travel!!!!!

something I noticed from the first time I turned the original radio on, is that the maximum steering angle was pretty pathetic. I was going to try to redo the steering linkage to move the pivot point farther from the pinion on the servo....but this worked waaayyyy better. it'll probably make it more squirrelly at speed, but I intend to spend more of my time sideways than doing speed runs (got an extra set of wheels with it.....gonna try to make some drift tires....).

also, this controller has a nice flat base so it sits vertically on it's own (already bent the antenna on the other one because you can't leave the **** thing alone for 2 seconds!!), and the on/off switch is in easy thumb reach, so if I get interference again, I'll just shut off the Tx, and the fail safe can slam on the brakes.

well, took it for another test spin today. had waaaayyyy more luck tuning.

it was running too rich, so I leaned out the HSN......which worked great for the idle, but as soon as I touched the throttle it killed. messed with it a few times, couldn't figure it out, then it dawned on me.....

I opened up the HSN a bunch, and leaned out the LSN, and it started running much better. within a few minutes, I had it running very nicely!

now I just need to cut a couple cooling holes in the subie body, and find a smoother surface (the road in front of my house is too rough to really get any speed at all).

been looking on ebay and such for parts/upgrades. it needs some suspension work, as the shocks on it are rather worn. I'm also going to remove the droop screws and fit longer/softer springs on it to allow for more travel.

I also stumbled across this, a nitro supercharger!! haha, sweet.

also, anyone know the offset of the wheels on here? I'm looking to pick up another set of wheels to put some drift tires on.
