Default Finished!

Thought you guys might like to see what I'm doing with my street subaru project.

hopefully it will finally be done here within a month or so.

this '92 loyale started life as a FWD 3-speed AT granny car in Florida. it was sold/traded (not sure which) to delray subaru with 130k miles on it. my dad was sent down there to buy my grandma a van (back when ATC's could fly free....but that's a whole different rant). having not found any worth buying, he remembered that she had had a subaru wagon, and bought this one. She thought it was neat, but wanted a van, so it sat in her driveway for a few weeks. then my dad's current daily driver, a '76 mercedes 300D didn't start one too many cold MN mornings, she said he could have the subaru. and so he drove it for a few years. then I got my license, and more or less inherited the car. I beat the crap out of it, and it took the beating quite well.

there it is wishing it wasn't just FWD.

well, I was tired of that drvetrain setup, so I bought an '85 4WD Gl, and the loyale was pushed into the woods and forgotten.

there's the '85 on the left, and the loyale in the high grass on the right

and then about a year later, the loyale hasn't moved, and the '85 has been retired to parts car, right after I bought and built my '88 (blue lifted one)

now, having driven large, top-heavy, swaybarless versions for a couple years, I'm longing for something with some on-road performance, mostly handling. so I bought a full-time 4WD dual range RX tranny with lockable center diff and matching LSD rear. a rear disc break conversion, and some 450/500lb coilovers from a buddy. and will be taking the EJ22 (MPFI 2.2l) out of my mom's old legacy.

anyway, I've really started working on it again. pulled it out of the woods and into the garage. here it is with the FWD rear end in it, and an extra engine and tranny in the back. this is about how it'll sit when everythings done and the coilovers are in it:

so now I've swapped the old rear end that I saved from the '85 (first step towards 4WD!), and dropped the old engine/tranny:

this is the first major mechanical step I've made, but I've spent about a week of hard work pulling the wiring, A/C, bumper, radiator, shift linkage, pedal box, etc.

I can't wait, this summer it won't be much of a street monster, just cause I can't afford some sweet R compound street tires yet. but I've got some really nice snow tires, and lots of M+S tires for ice racing and RallyX. this thing will be all go and no show, lol. and no, not go in a straight line either, this will be a track car. there will be no frum rolls, or any stupid crap like that!

Subaru stopped making FWD cars in '96, I beleive.

the '64 F100 is a pile of crap. there's more paint than steel now. we can't move it because it's rusted in half and the brakes don't work.

how many subarus? well, including my mom's, I was up to 7 for a few days about a month ago. slight overlap from buying one to junking the '85. there's:
2 '88 lifted GL Wagons
'92 legacy (light blue one with black hood), also FWD, dad's current daily driver
'94 legacy wagon, going to be dad's driver once the title is trasferred
'01 legacy (green one in the garage), mom's
and this '92 loyale

anyway, I was out of town for the weekend, so no new progress was made, the old engine and tranny are still sitting on the cardboard under the body.

I'm having a few buddies over tomorrow, and hopefully we'll get the suspension back on, and the tranny in. then I can start stripping out the wiring.

and no, it will not be a street racer. it will be a daily driver and TRACK racer. I've learned very quickly from the offroad world, that the more illegal use that occurs, the less legal use is allowed.

little update, not much worth seeing (and won't be for awhile....), but we put the front suspension back on, installed the tranny, rear diff, and rear axles today. started working on the driveshaft.....then realized the one I have is too short. DOH

well, not much to show for it. I left my camera in my girlfriends backpack after our NYC trip, so I won't be getting it back for a week....

BUT, the '92 legacy is almost completely stripped, all wiring was removed, and is almost completely installed in the loyale.

all underhood wiring is done as of this afternoon, as well as the center diff lock switch, and cruise control.

I'm going to go pick up a die grinder tomorrow so I can notch the flywheel and motor mount holes, then do what I can to get the engine in.

the linkage is virtually all installed...need to stop at the junkyard and get one more little bracket...but no big deal.

got the longer driveshaft, and assembled it. needed to soak the tranny end in some frash gear oil since it had been dry for quite some time. so it's not in yeat

got the rear brakes, will try to put them in tomorrow. as well as wire up the ignition, fuel pump, and starter relays, so I can try to fire it up and start diagnosing problems...as well as wire up the dash.....and...well....everything else

Back from the dead!! for the first time in 3 years, the loyale has an engine in it that runs!!! it's about 4am here, and I just got it started...and boy does it sound mean! I gotta put in shift linkage, some coolant lines (and therefore coolant), and a few interior pieces, and it'll be ready for the road tomorrow!!!!

pics to come tomorrow!

I had to switch wheels, cause the tires on those alloys are a few years old, and I just don't trust them

first, the stock airbox flows plenty up to ~300awhp

next, no CAI system made for the loyale, and for rallyX and more, I want my intake up away from the ground.

and last, I am going to put a K&N on it once I finish making the adapter so it'll fit better under the hood and sound better.
