airbrushed acrylic............
i like enamels just fine but when it comes to models and xmods i prefer acrylic.
it easier to work with, less toxic, water soluable and it dries quicker.

if your dripping, try spraying at a greater distance from the car. 8-10 inches is usually good.
4 light coats are better then 2 heavy coats.

Do you think buying an airbrush is necessary for a nice finish or can I also achieve that with spraypaint ?

As you can tell, painting aint my thing. I mean Im aight at it, I just dont get even close to the same results as you get !

a spray can works fine as long as you aren't too close to the thing being sprayed. i use testors spray cans and look at my torino. it didn't turn out too good but its decent.

and like bondo said the recommended spray length is 8-10 inches.

you can achieve good results with rattlecans but no matter how good it is,it would have been better with an airbrush.
if you plan on painting more then one car then yes i would invest in atleast a testors airbrush.
they do the trick and are pretty cheap.think of it this way, you pay $10-15 bux for a bodykit or command logics, wheels etc.....why not pay the same for a good looking paintjob.

except for the flames and front grill, the mustang in my "custom flames" tut was painted with spraypaint.

i have a pretty good painting tutorial on another forum but im not sure if posting the link is allowed so if you want to take a look you can pm me for the link.

if you're using the testors stuff (I pretty much have to, since there's no local source for anything else). the enamel has a much better color selection. but the acrylics are sooo much easier to clean up (water soluable). so I go acrylic whenever I can, but if I really want a color that I can't get otherwise....I'll get enamel.

That sounds good....
Ill go for acrilic. Do you think red, yellow, blue, and silver come in acrylics ?
Also, can I handpaint acrylic or is it only with an airbrush ?

tamiya has just about any acry;ic color you can think of.
only problem is you have to go to a hobby shop to get it.

dont hand paint ANYTHING except for details.
it will look sloppy and you probably wont be happy.

bomdop i wouldn't say you cant hand paint ANYTHING because it would comeout sloppy, just look at my firebird... i hand painted that and it looks pretty good.

but i dont think ill ever hand paint again... i like spray too much. it comes out better.

I think Ill try and look for an airbrush, and if I dont find something that pleases me, Ill just go with sraypaint and then acrylic for the handpainted details (graphics).
What do you guys think ?

my proof that a mod gave me permission.

here is the paint tutorial i wrote for xmod bodies.
this was painted with acrylic from an airbrush.
i was thinking about posting this tut here but this site already has two "how to paint" writeups.

ever used an airbrush? because having done it all 3 ways (brush, rattle can, and cheap airbrush), I can tell you that even the best hand painted job will look worse than almost any airbrush job (as long as it's not too thick). PERIOD

yes, the cheap, all-in-one testors airbrush kit comes with all those colors. yes, they can be hand painted, but I wouldn't recommend. I occasionally hand touch-up the edges of a paint job, and it stands out like a sore thumb if you're not extremely careful. if you do do any hand painting, I would highly recommend getting yourself a very fine detailing brush (also sold at wal-mart...right next to the airbrush).

I don't know why this is so difficult. the basic testors airbrush is not as good as most airbrushes, but is far better than any rattle-can could ever be. and the paint is cheaper, and the clean-up is simple since you can use acrylics.

i couldnt have said it better.
MC4L: i cant say that your firebird looks bad, as i havnt seen it but if you handpainted it i can tell you it would have looked better with an airbrush.
your cool as hell in my book but i gotta shoot it straight as i see it.
i try to help with the elecs and motors as much as i can but my skills lie in paint, the ABSOLUTE best way to paint is with airbrush.
