Default V-dubbed: Beach Bum Golf MK2

My VW finally arrived Tuesday. I got to work. This is a much less clean project I am trying to give it the looks of age and multiple owners. Don't mind the wheelbase placement, none of the mounts are done and the model itself is crooked, so the left and right don't match up yet.

The car was red at one time and the cheap respray didn't take care of the motor bay.

I chipped the paint using a technique I found on a website on building resin figures. You use salt. Spray the base color (silver) then apply the salt in the parts you want chipped with water, let it dry. It was a little trickier because I needed red and blue. So I applied the salt, masked off the motorbay and sprayed the blue. Clumping the salt together makes larger patches missing. I used a two-part water, one part matt black paint solution to dirty it. I applied it in all of the body lines, and lifted the excess with a paper towel. After it dried I gave it a wetsand.

Tonight I am going to add rust, the hood will be completely rusted and rust in the larger chips and around the under chassis. I still need a roof rack, and details. I have some tricks up my sleeve to make the interior scale, and am working on bumper stickers.

Comments and suggestions are more than welcome.

Wow thats is great! So realistic! Another top notch project surge!!

Are you going to do anything to the chassis to make look aged also??

Yeah, I live in a College town and I see a lot of craig's list specials driving around splattered with bumper stickers, I am kind of playing off of that.

Thanks man.

Whichever chassis parts are exposed will get weathered. Luckily there is a HUGE space under the hood to put the motor in, anything that is showing in between will be weathered with brown and dirt.

TI and I will have to get together and race the wildcat against the VW...an xmods 24 hrs of lemons.

You have this posted on XMF as a MiniZ project but here as an Xmod project?

Looks like you're off to a wonderful start to another great project. I can't wait to see what that rusted hood looks like when you're done with it.

Cheers,
Kyle.

I would if I knew, it's my buddies, he does model junkyards. I will get the name of it when I borrow it. It isn't cheap, but it has great results.

GENIUS!
I nominate this one for body of the year!

I'm loving it.
Well, apart from the rims, but I love it.

I can't help you to much on the rear clip... have you tried an L-brackett? Thats what I did on my Sil80 project and my wrx, they worked out great.

Thanks. I was trying to use the models wheels, but they won't clear the hub, so the offset is to much, I would have to completely ditch the fenders. If I can find them I have some mini-z porsche rims, and a couple other options. It is one of the reasons I haven't even started the mounts, because they are subject to change depending on the wheel/tire set.

I am going to work out somehting, this is probably going to be a much slower build than some of my past due purely to finding the perfect parts.

Update!

Got the roof rack, it was a little melted in shipping...but thats alright, looks bent. Had to cut it in half to match the width of the roof, but the seams will be covered with the surfboard. Have the windows stickered, and added license plates(the front one hanging on by mere good intentions ). The hood is still rusting. Without further adou,

Oh yeah, cleanliness doesn't matter when you drive this VW...

I have taillights, but haven't installed them yet. I might bust one one and reglue it, so that it looks shattered....still up in the air.
