if you would get online! the GT-R is a SKYLINE! they cant tecnically call it a skyline because they are banned in the US. i know of one person that has an actual skyline r-34. the only way he got it to the US is because he is in the military. and got his from japan.
so before you get on to forums and post crap like that please do some research and figure out what you are talking about before you ASSUME stuff please. it saves you from looking stupid. just like in this case |

Ok let me rephase it the GT-R is a skyline only due to its heritage but the skyline name was dropped due to different designs that dont follow the pattern of the skyline models as explained on Wikipedia.
So because the skyline badge was dropped for the GT-R its not called a skyline officaly which is what im talking about. Also the name is not the reason the skylines are banned in the states its due to the speed potential of the car that the US banned the car in thoughts of the street racing growing back when the skylines were being produced. And as for the person you know with a skyline hes lucky to own one and thank him for his service as i once served myself from 07-09 in the army

You don't have to be in the military to get one. You just need the right amount of money and know the right company to bring it to the states and modify it to be street legal here in the states. My father-in-law's best friend brought an R-33 back. The company that was bringing it over was shaddy and had legal problems. His car sat in a storage lot for about a year. He ended up driving down there with a trailer and brought it back to WA and did all the modifications himself.
My father-in-law brought up a good point about why the Skyline was never allowed in the states. His theory is that the "Big 3" wouldn't allow it. They would have a hard time competing with a foreign car that had the style and specs of the SKyline. Which would you prefer? A Mustang, Camero, or a Skyline? Now I know everyone wouldn't buy the Skyline. A lot would still be loyal to American made cars, but it would be a huge competition. It does make sense to me, but saying that it being banned is due to the speed potential is a little ridiculous to me. There are cars in America that have as much if not more speed potential then a Skyline. I plan on bringing one back one of these years. I'm in the Air Force, and depending on when I decide to get out. It's not cheap, but at least my wife is down with the idea. She wants one too, so I might have to save up for 2, lol. |

You do have a point as america is always trying to limit challenges that could take away from money

And your father in law is just being silly. The Skyline could not meet the same safety and emissions standards as the Camaro, Mustang, 300ZX, Supra, etc etc. It was Nissan's own lazyness to create a US version that prevented it from being sold here.

I don't see why anybody would care about the nomenclature anyways. People that brood over things like this amaze me; if they would put their time and efforts into something constructive, imagine the possibilities. o_O

"Nissan has not imported this car to the U.S. and it is not certified for sale here. First off it is right hand drive. It also does not meet the DOT emissions controls test. It also has not been crash tested and certified by the DOT. Nissan does not import the Skyline although the current Japanese Skyline two-door is the car known as the Infiniti G35 Coupe in America. Parts for this car are non-existent in the U.S. There are a few importers that can sell a legal Skyline in the U.S. but they are very expensive." Source answers.com WikiAnswers So, 928shifty, before you start telling him he should do some research, you might just want to do some yourself, google it first. This whole thread could have easily been avoided through research. Last edited by Blade.; 12-07-2009 at 07:09 PM.. |

there are street legal daily drivers in the US that posess over 1000 horses under their hoods. the lamborghinis are street legal and they have over 600 horses. the newest rendition of the Viper has upwards of 600hp. the ZR1 has 600+, the Z06 has 505. so you are absolutely incorrect. and the Shelby GT500KR has over 500 and is street legal. that's a mustang.
another reason why Skyline GTR's are most of the time illegal is that their VIN numbers do not conform with the US system of vehicle identification. mainly though, they have not the regulation safety and emissions stuff that the US requires. it would be way too expensive to import one. so just buy a 240sx and stuff a RB26DETT into it. that would be much more cost effective than importing a R34. and yes it gets on my nerves a bit when people call the Nissan GTR R35 a skyline, as that name has been dropped. R35 is correct, but skyline is not, just btw.

This is unrelated, but reffering to Texan's Post on how they were imported to America w/o Drivetrain, I have heard that certain Toyota Pickups were done this way. The Cabs and Chassis were made and assembled in Japan, while the bed's were made in the U.S. (which is why they rust like crazy, I think) That way Toyota could ship them much cheaper as a "Part" rather than an entire vehicle.

OK guys as much as I love a good argument I'm sorry but I'm going to have to close this before it gets to crazy....
Skylines can be got in most countries if you have the money. Street legal does not require you to have less than X power, case in point the Mustang SuperSnake 725 horsepower fully street legal and available through Shelby for about 125K. Lets just agree to disagree, some people what to call it a Skyline, some want to call it an R-35 it is what it is.
