Talking R/C Boat from SCRATCH using Xmod EP.

So My friends and i started this thing where we will all build something from scratch. Last week it was a sail boat. that was pretty cool. I'll post pics if you want. But the reason I have this posted under XMODS projects is that this time we have to build a R/C boat. The guidelines were that it has to float. It has to move and turn via Remote control. and we can't just buy a kyosho speed boa, paint it, and call it custom. So I am choosing to use a set of Xmod electronics to do this. So I am looking for Ideas. especially on waterproofing it to protect the EP and also what materials to use.

Your Thoughts?

I am going to wrap mine in plastic and then probably tape it up to seal it.

Thats the best idea I had.

Perhaps you could literally use plumbers goop to coat the entire board.

Thats not a bad idea. I didn't think of that.

It will probably be messy, but it would work really well.

Yeah you would probably want to brush it on in a couple layers.

You guys already have the boards?

not yet. Culd you attach to motors to one board ? or would that be bad for it?

Well. If you had FETs and enough voltage it would probably be okay - but I've never seen it done.

buuut.. any reason you want two motors?

Yeah, its definitely possible but you'd certainly need stacked FETs. Especially if your looking at double aftermarket motors. I've never seen it done but I can't think of a reason it wouldn't work. I think Lipos would be good for that sort of amperage being pulled as well.

You could use two boards and two motors, put one on each side of the back of the boat, and use only the throttle of two controllers. Hold both to go forward and one to turn.

You're thinking of one of the GSR members from XMW. I had forgotten about that, but it was pretty wicked in detail. I know the thread is still there, it was last year.

dual motors should work fine with stock fets, it has been done before to, just ask gearhead about his 8X8 (4X8 Tatra) but they were stock stage 1, but I would run 2x2 fets to be safe with dual stage ones, maybe even higher if you wanna go aftermarket

I see what your saying, but I was also accounting for the fact that the FETs will likely be insulated in something that may increase heat on the FETs. The hotter they get the easier they will pop from current.

Well That orca gave me Ideas and made me sad cuz I am not as good.
BUT i will not give up. I will probably eventually need stacked FETS for it. thanks for the EP tips guys. What should I use for the main body? thin grade of aluminum? Styrofoam? Wood? 04 Mustang GT ?

your thoughts?

Personally I have no experience, but if it were me I would go for Styrofoam covered in rubber cement or some type of water sealing object. Aluminum seems to heavy and wood is hard to work with this small, but I guess if you flipped an 04 stang body upside down....viola! a floating chassis lol.....then again heres a hole for the antennae...

A guy around here shapes green crafting foam to the hull design and then vacuum forms thin 0.040" lexan over the foam. He then shaves down the hull to get the needed room to fit electronics and the like and then paints the clear plastic lexan the desired color. The lexan provides the cover from the elements, and the hull design plus the foam provide the flotation.

However, vacuum forming may be a little difficult to do without the proper setup (which inevitably costs more money). I would suggest a simple flat bottom style hull and just glue sheets of styrene together to get the desired shape and effect. Or, if you wanted to get more indepth, do a V-hull with thin strakes to keep the direction more true.

Sounds like a nice project. Hope it turns out the way you want it to.

Cheers,
Kyle.
