59 Bel Air vs 09 Malibu

I blame the X-frame on those earlier chevys, all the malibu had to do was pile through 50 year old sheet metal. Put a '64 Impala with full frame rails!
But, a total waste of a good car.

Not really a waste, because the bel air is a four door & all though some poeple like them its not as valuable as a two door. But it is a cool vid though.

You're an idiot. The number of doors changes nothing.

All those comments made me laugh... chevy fans are so crazy... it was a nice car in its day and yes that was a pristine model that would have been a great addition to someones collection but its just a Bel Air... I could go to Cuba and buy 5 of them... Chevy mass produces its cars so badly it really wasn't a waste to loose one of them in a scientific demonstration.

You'd have an exact set of comments had they used a Ford Fairlane, a Chrysler Imperial, or Plymouth Fury. All of which are pieces of history. It was in no way scientific, or I want to see the detailed scientific report. They knew the x-framed Chevy would falter in an off-set crash and used it to prove that a car that was never designed for safety would crumple in a wreck.
It was just a "Look at what we 'did' over 50 years, weeeee crash cars". IIHS does this a lot with out really doing any science. Should see their "roll over roof strength" tests.

Either way, that Malibu held up **** well. Did the windshield even break? The drivers door looked to still be lined up almost perfectly along the roof line after the impact. That's impressive..
Too bad they used a pristine Bel Air and destroyed it though, and the fact that it is a 4 door means nothing.. it's an old classic car in perfect shape, that in itself is HARD to come by now days unless you have lots of money. |

Uh, GM. That has got to be the WORSE design for a frame I have ever seen. I saw this a while ago on GM Inside New forums. Nobody there cares too much about the '59. It wasnt in really good shape though. The paint looked horrible, and maybe it was missing an engine, because last time I checked the engine either provided some resistence or it ended up where the stickshift was supposed to be, and from the interior camera I didnt see that firewall break. Sure its a waste of a good car, but then again so was Cash for Clunkers! So many good cars saw the crusher. And about the doors, it would be a put-off, but the insurance for them is cheaper and they're more practical, so the whole 2door/4door thing doesnt matter. And there are plenty more floating around. Would you buy that Bel-Air?

You can see why in a frontal off-set crash it didn't do well. Car was never designed for safety, and IIHS knew this to prove their point that a car designed to be safe would do better.... Put it against a tucker torpedo though...

Dude, if they crashed a Tucker I would lose all hope for America and go to Britain. There are barely 48 Tuckers left, and they are too rare o kill. But boy were those things safe (compared to other vehicles of the time)!
