Default ~Project: Tree-Fitty Drift~

^South Park reference for all who're wondering where it came from.

I decided to finally start working on my 350z. I've been planning it for a really long time but I wanted it perfect so I wanted to wait til I was good enough work on it. Nows the time!!!!! I already got started. My plan is to make the front bumper look like the Top Secret 350z D1 car. The side skirts will be similar to the ones on this 350z, which as the bumper but its the long nose version. I like the standard one more. Its a little easier to make too.

This is the end goal

But I'm sure I want it white like this one

And heres the progress I've made so far. With the help of Dr. Kustom I hope to make this the best project car I've made. I haven't really had a good history with doing custom projects. Hopefully it'll change with this car!

And more putty work today to get the bumper more round. Added more putty to the side skirts too so I can add the styrene to the bottom of it later to get the side skirt look I want.

I think I added too much putty on the lip. I'll cut a little off in the middle and sand it. Its coming along, I'm really happy with what it looks like so far.

And a shot at the back just to get the whole car. Plan is to putty up those holes, and when its white the lip will be painted black.

Wish me luck! I hope to finish it in 2 weeks so plenty of updates til then

That z is looking real nice man; you've got amazing advice with Dr. Kustom there. I'm pretty sure it's gonna turn out to be a real badas$ project once you've done with it.

For sure I'll be checking this project!

White will be the base. Of course since its a drifter and I will drive it, its gonna be sticker slapped!!! If I could find the right D1 decals they're going on it for sure. And thanks!

Thanks man it means a lot coming from an amazing body work specialist like you!

Small update today. I got some wheels yesterday from Faze on MZR. They're the Silvia S15 wheels!!! I've wanted them for sometime now, and they came with drift tires installed, which were a HUGE pain to take off, had to put them in a vice and tap them out with a hammer. 2 got stubborn, so I did a trick by microwaving them for a bit then they tapped out as well. Took a good 25 min though.... At least they look good!!!

For today, I plan on doing gearguy70's MA-010 wheel stub mod. I wanted to do it for sometime, but I didn't have a dremel Or so I thought........ I realized, a drill with the right bit on it = dremel (fail....). So! I went and found this!!! Perfect!!!

After testing it out on a stub, I felt the need to do it for my 350z chassis which it shares with the R32. I took my time luckily....40 min goes by.......

And I'm happy What I noticed was these wheels have a slight offset to them and it really looks flush like a real drift car!! LOVE THESE WHEELS!!

The drill bit was perfect!! It made the stubs look so factory...

Thank you gearguy70!!!!!!!! One of the BEST mods ever!!!!! Now I don't have to cut up MA-010 wheels just to put them on my cars........

I plan on doing this the rest of the day for my other cars and skipping the body work for now. Its a great mod you only have to do once, then you can finally use MA-010 wheels!!!

Take your time though...and remember to grind, and wait for about 30 secs or else it will heat up too much and bend/move like this and end up crooked. Luckily I only ruined on stub. I wouldn't have anymore to replace if I messed up on the other ones....

2nd try on my last stub and it came out great!

Tomorrow I'll do some more putty work. Today I'm going to cut some of the putty off and clean it up a bit and I'll update tomorrow. Thanks for the comments guys keep 'em coming

OMG right when I saw the turquoise checkers I was like "Garage Hiro 350z" LOL!!! Yeah thats the long nose version of the bumper. It looks slightly different, not sure if I want that look or not....

Another small update. Cleaned up some of the bumper of excess putty, shaped up the lip with a hobby knife, I cut one side a little too far though so I'll need to fix it later. Marked up the bumper and drew in the details. I'm having trouble with the sides of the bumper though, I added a little too much putty. Looking back at the 1:1 bumper, it has a nice smooth curve where the wheel well is. I'm trying to figure out how to make this part smooth....I think I just need to add the right amount of putty and sand it to round it out.

the part where the putty meets the wheel well part of the bumper is where I'm having trouble. I want this detail on the bumper, but I don't knowif I should add putty all the way up the wheel well, or just had some putty to the bumper and sand the putty so that it curves to the wheel well. The part I'm talking about is marked with the sharpie. Tricky spot to sand too...

And the picture of the long nose version of the bumper provided by Flipsoulja from Garage Hiro (amazing bodywork specialist/s in japan) gave me ideas on making this the long nose version instead...except the detail in this one is over the top. I don't think I can do the vents that well.

^^That bumper was cut off of the Mini-Z 350z. I don't know if I should switch to that look or not. We'll see.

EDIT: Actually that bumper is different lol I looked it up, its the Option Stream Z33 bumper. Similar though.

i bolded what you should do. if you've seen my 350z nismo (im sure you have), i tried doing something like that,
but not too noticeable. try rolling a little piece of the epoxy putty you use, and with the wet finger method,
smooth out that area. its not too hard, you could manage it.

(my little technique is to use tamiya white putty for things like that. its easy to sand and, since its liquidy,
pretty easy to apply with a toothpick).

keep it up!

Right here

Had plenty of time today to work on it. Got to primering the body to see where the blemishes were etc. Took pics in my garage, and it was a sauna. My camera started fogging! LOL Its really humid this week. So humid my garage felt like a swimming pool and breathing was just effed up......

Started sanding and puttying up the spots. Using a small amount of putty is really tough, every time it feels like too much for such a small scratch.

the front bumper is yet again the hardest part. Sanding it took FOREVER. let it be learned that using too much putty wastes your time in sanding. I'm thinking of not even making the holes, its way too hard and it will ruin the strength of the bumper. I'm afraid of making it too weak and when I drift it and hit stuff I might break it so I'm just going to try and even the stuff out I have now, finish up the sides (which are annoyingly hard) and paint it.

I did this a while ago but I sanded down the spoiler and rear bumper. Filled the holes a while ago in the bumper and sanded them down today.

More to come soon, I'll be priming most of the parts tomorrow, but I'm low on primer so it might have to wait til next week or so when I grab more materials.

Very little hehe

Quick update, got it sanded down and primed again. But now I got a small problem with small blemishes that are bothering me. Also, paint got globbed up in the roof lines, I used a knife to scrape out the excess paint but it scraped out the primer too. Should I sand it down again and prime it again? I'm hesitant to do anything right now, don't know whether to shoot the paint or prime again...

Other things that bother me are...

The putty i didn't sand down in the rear...

Small scratch of some sort i didn't see earlier, now exposed in the primer (its really small above the window, near the back part of the roof)

Paint didn't settle well (to the left of the door handle, really small)

so what should I do? Should I sand it and prime it again? I'm confused on what to do....

Well what I do is sand any imperfections in the paint or any high/low spots on the putty & then shoot another coat of primer.

Looks nice. Just wondering, where do you guys get the custom wheels? I want to get some Volk TE37's or BBS LM's for my Xmods.
