On XP plug it in and let it get represented and then go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter and then set it up to Defrag your F Drive.

I've tried that bud, it just says that the disc is not formatted and asks if I would like to format it now, i say yes and it says that it cant be formatted. I downloaded western digitals diagnostic tool and it fails the cable test...tried 2 different brand new usb 2.0 cables. I agree with your earlier statement that something is corrupted because when i format with WD"s tool it warns that there are files on the disc that will be deleted. The WD tool lets me format it and windows discmgmt.svc shows it as healthy (although the size is grossly misrepresented) but anytime i try to access it it says it is not formatted.

Last thing I can suggest is the rip the HD out of it's case and plug it into the computer whether it is SATA or IDE. Would assume it is SATA....do you have a SATA equipped PC?

Yes, I was actually thinking in the other direction of taking a HD out of an old computer and plugging it into my external HD box...would basically prove the same point your trying to make.

if nothing works you could 1 buy a new one 2 there is a site that has a external docking station that you can plug any hard drive into. so if you want to keep the one you have all you need is to buy the docking staion i can give you a link if you want.
