Speed AND torque is possible in 4x4 trucks
Ok a while back we had a small discussion about the airplane motor/gearbox mod in the truck chassis. For the record I have a F150 chassis with a 1:24th scale Tahoe body that has full interior, a driver, not shown in the pics are a roof rack with a spare, a hilift jack, light bar, scale offroad details, running aoshima swampers, locked front and rear diffs, 4 rat shack rechargeable AAAs in the stock battery tray, and a GWS twinmotor mounted in the stock Xmod tranny. Given it took alot of dremel time to get it to fit but I can still mount a bone stock non cut xmod truck body on the chassis with stock mounts. just to clear up the questions here is the truck. And for the record this rig weighs 14.7 ounces with the batteries and all the gear.
This is the motor. This is a shot of what it can do on deep pile carpet. LINK>>>http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v2...nt=wheelie.flv

everything in the chassis except for the motor and tires is stock or a RS upgrade. the motor was bought for $20 at a local hobby shop its a over the counter part. as far as how it handles well its really similar to the real thing you get into a turn on rough terrain to fast and you will roll it lol thank the gods for rubber mirrors.

any hobby shop that does RC planes will carry that or something comparable. the only problem is getting it to fit. if im not mistaken on his last servo motor mod he had some really nice aluminum spacers and a perfect bracket made. not everybody can come up with stuff like that for perfect motor fits. and with so much torque your gearing and motor have to be in really secure.

when your hummer was doing donuts a could see some of the tires coming off the ground because of how fast it was going .

That is similar to the airplane motor I used. I posted a link to it for $13 in my mudder thread I think?!? Mine was a single motor with gear, and it fit very easily. I just needed to mount a RS gear to the shaft, cut the excess shaft length, and cut a tiny bit out of the orange gear cover. Then a bit of hobby epoxy held it in place. That was the meanest motor I EVER used.
The truck is in parts right now, so no video, but I'm using it to build a new crawler. Once I get the rest of the parts together and time to build it... here's a pic of it transplanted onto to the new xmod for a test run before I start my project. It even goes crazy on a stock truck!!! Mad tourque through the roof... Last edited by janikphoto; 03-01-2007 at 12:00 AM.. |
