Default Mazda RX7

A while back I owned an 89 RX7. And while this car didn't like the cold weather, and gave me it's share of problems during the years I owned it, I loved that little car.
Unfortunately I never thought to take a picture of it while I owned it.
The only picture that I have was taken by my mother with me in the car, and it was more of me than the car.

I miss my little RX7 so I decided to make a mini replica of the car.
I just ordered this body today from Kenon hobby..................

It wont be exactly the same as my car was, and I'll never be able to find rims exactly like my car had, but I never cared for my rims anyways.

Now you can't really even tell what kind of car is in the only pic I have since it was more of a close-up of my face. But the good thing about the pic is I can get a perfect color match to the original.(I'm not going to show the pic because it's not a good picture of me and I'm embarrassed)

The body is going to be mounted on the Mini-Z MR01 I recently scored for $30. Since it shares the same 90mm wheelbase as the Porsche 911 that the chassis came with, the only thing I'll have to change is the front clip, and possibly the wheels.

Pretty soon I'll be driving my RX7 again..............well, sort of at least.

grey colour with black side stripes?

this will look interesting. keep the updates coming when you can!

Actually, a metallic slate blue.
Hopefully it will be here by Saturday, then I'll take a trip to Auto Zone with my picture and try to match the color to a can of Dupli-color.
It won't be too fancy since my old RX7 was pretty plain.

I'm already shopping for new wheels for it now, but I haven't found the right ones yet.

The body came in today!

I was surprised on how many spare optional parts that came with it.

It also came with 3 sets of different interchangeable headlights.

I wont be using the body kit or the giant goofy wing on this car.
My car didn't have a wing but I wished my car had a little wing, so I'm using the small optional wing on this one.
I raised the front suspension a bit after I took the pics.

I cant wait to get the paint. Unfortunately I cant drive right now since I recently had surgery on my right ankle, so right now I'm wearing a cast.
I'll have my wife drive me to the auto parts store this weekend.

iam looking what i see so far. you got the drift body thats what the option parts are for the wheels you have kinda suit that body for some reason if only they were wider but as its your car its upto you.

I might be able to fit a set of wide rims in back, but it will be close.
I'm not sure if my rear end is wider since I'm using a MR02 pod and diff.
I also could probably get away with a +1 offset in front but I'd like to keep the front wheels tucked under the body since the MR01 doesn't have a servo saver. I might just save myself a few stripped servo gears this way.

I'll try a set of wide rears later, but these rims do suit this body more than my other set.

I got some paint.

This paint might be slightly lighter than the color I was looking for but it's pretty close.
I am pretty sure the trim on the doors and fenders were the same color as the rest of the car and not black. I did a bit if research and most of the cars from that year didn't have the black trim either, so it's staying this color.
I still have to paint the window trim black, and paint the turn and brake lights.

Thanks!
It looks a little lighter in the camera flash since it's metallic, but I'm definitely pleased with the color.

Some dust or particles somehow settled on the hood making it look rough, so I wet-sanded a bit and put on a final coat. Now it looks smooth like it supposed to be.

I got it pretty much all painted up but I can't find the good camera so I took a pic with the old cheap camera for the time being.........................

The more I look at it, the more it brings back memories.

..............Sorry to disappoint anyone who doesn't care for the older style RX-7, but I've never really been a fan of the FD body, so it wouldn't be a good project for me.
I'll get better pics when I find the good camera.

Love it! I wanted that exact car so bad in the late 80s.

Yeah, I wanted one back then too.
Unfortunately I couldn't afford one until the late 90's.

Thanks for the compliment. I cant wait to get a decent photo of it.
I still have to paint the 2 directional lights but I cant find my little bottle of
"turn signal amber" so those lights will have to wait for now.
The black paint that I used for the window trim wasn't spaying right, but I used it anyways. I should have just picked up another can of paint, or just used my airbrush but I just couldn't wait. Besides the weather was just right for painting so I just got it done.
It doesn't really look too bad, and at least the paint didn't bleed at all.
I think I'm going to skip the clear coat and just give it a good coat of wax instead. I want to keep the paint thin to preserve the body lines, plus I have plenty of paint left over for touch ups if I get a scratch.

I finished this a while ago but I finally took a decent picture..............

I'm pleased with the final outcome.
Looking at this body sure brings back memories.

FC RX-7!!! Love what you did with the car, I've always loved the FC. Nice choice of color too, I wanted one just like that on autotrader a while back but had to think of the consequences of rotary in the winter time.... At least you can still "drive" the car with no starting problems due to cold weather lol.
