External board for a Touring Car

Hey guys! I'm planning to eventually get an external board and I want to know which board would be the best. I'm not sure if size or power is most important. Does size really matter? If it does I will get the BUG and if it doesn't I will probably get a V2.2.

Theres no best, it's all opinion.

What are you running ? You might not need that much for what your running, saving you money. For typical all out Xmods, I'll recommend the Spider V4 or the V2.2. But then again, I'll pick the Bug V1 just incase I want to run a lower wind motor or something.

Well, I will be running around a chili-spec pattern wound motor with Li-Poly, custom AWD, and Ceramic Bearings. It will also have a Mini-Z board and an HS-55 servo. I think the Spider would be good, but does anyone else have an opinion on this?

The V4 or V2.2 is enough for your use. I won't recommend a Mini-Z board with lith-ions or lipos. Extreme servo jitter. Not sure if that applys if you have the HS-55, but just a heads up.

It shouldn't apply to the HS-55 because I heard it is meant to handle up to 9 volts!

False. HiTec suggests that the maximum voltage you should use with the HS55 is 6.0V. Are you capable of using 9V with the HS55? Of course, but it probably (actually, I know for a fact from experience that it won't ) last nearly as long as an identical HS55 used at the recommended 4.8-6.0V.

Hmmmmm.... Does the Atomic v2.2 act like a BEC? If it does then I guess I should use that.

Also, even without a BEC will the HS-55 jitter noticably?

Donzii is right, and if you look through my threads you'll see Ive used alot of HS-55 servos.... You WILL have jitter, trust me. It is a great servo but most micro servos are 6v. I will let you know first off, a Chilli w/ LiPo /// Completely uncontrolable car.. even for an experienced driver. I suggest Lipo w/ a Speedy 07,(PN) and using stock FETs. that is a good set up that will give you a ffffffast car but in a more controlable platform. (maybe just stick with a single layer of FETs but upgrade them to 3010s or somthing) 2 reasons.... 1. like I said before "UN controlable" and 2. It will burn up your servo.

Speedy 07 motor/ Stock Fets/ Lipo. Good fast setup. You will be upset with all the $$ you spend because you wouldn't be able to drive it except in circles or a 10 second drag run. The thing is, that with Lithium batterries and Turbos (externals or stacked FETs) combined.... your motor will heat up in less then a minute. It really isn't very fun for a car your planning on driving around alot. I actually have a chilli w/ lithium and a V2 on a drag car xmod... see thread "XXX-Project make your guesses" . I also have had that chilli in a mini-z with lithium, But it was to much so I used it for the project car. Each in itself isn t very bad it's combining the 3, that just makes it useless.

I had lithium on my X-mod Skyline w/ just a stage 2 motor and it was fast as hell. Almost to the point where I couldn't control it. Was fun at first, but since I'm not the most experienced driver, it became a little more then I wanted. I was thinking about putting liths in my Mini-Z AWD, but decided to do a 2x3 stack of 8858's and got an Atomic Stock R motor. It's pretty fast (34kmh+ on the dyno). Very fast for me, and still very controllable. Up next I am gonna get the Atomic Chili. That should quench my need for speed, at least for the moment, lol.

Hmmmm, Would a custom pattern wound 50t motor in the Atomic BB can be too fast? That's what I'm planning on making soon.

I think you can always start with a 50T and lower the turn count depending on how you feel about 50T's speed. I've run a 43T on stock FETs in my Xmod with no problem and felt it had a great balance of speed and acceleration for my application. I'd say start at 50T and see what you feel like from there.
