Default Ipod Classic 80gb issue

hey guys, I got a ipod classic 80gb from a friend and it was all scratched to hell and the back was all dented up and the edges where all scraped (its aluminum so..) and i ordered a new front, back, clickwheel, and screen lens to make it look brand new. It was working perfect before but now i went to test it and im greeted with the apple boot screen then it goes to a O with a X in the middle and it says www.apple.com/support/ipod or something like that. Does anyone know what happened? or how to fix it? I can get pics tomorrow if need be. If its a loss then ill sell it on the bay for parts but id rather have a working classic. Thanks for any help

Any chance you can get a video of the screens? Maybe that will help us further diagnose your problem.

There are a few aftermarket apps that might be worth looking at, they do low-level formats of the iPod and sometimes work better than doing a factory reset does but before doing any of that I would try to work out exactly what the on screen error means in case it has something to do with loose wiring from you opening it up or something stupid like that.

I hate to tell you this but I get people asking me about this (I work on PC's part time) and ALOT of times its the hard drive that's gone bad - NOT ALWAYS but ALOT of times it is.... good luck, you might be one of the lucky ones and your Ipod HDD might just need a full format...

I've got a lot of experience fixing iPods, and to me, judging by the condition the casing was in, I would say the iPod has been dropped numerous times, which leads me to believe the HDD is shot.

I believe they cost ~$40 for a new HDD, maybe more, not sure. If you're willing to risk that $$, try that. If that doesn't work, you can do what you said, and sell it on the bay.
