Need help wiring a relay..
I've picked up some standard automotive relays*, and I need some help wiring it.
I need it so that it's off or acts like the switch is off when I'm suppling power to it. When there's no power being supplied to it, that wire is just an open circuit. Kind of hard to explain, but say power is going to the relay, I need it to be open, or be pushing a circuit to be open. But when you cut power, the circuit is closed, and it's like the switch is in the on position. Anyone? *I'm pretty sure it's SPDT relay. Not 100% though and I can't check it..

So you want to turn of a load when the relay coil is energized, if I understand right.
This small diagram is applicable to most automotive relays. Almost all use the 30 87a 87 85 86 pin numbers. You will need a five pin relay. If your relay is number 1-5 on the pins I can help you later. Bosch relays use the pin numbers in my diagram, are a cheap and easy to get. if you need any more help ask |

Is there someway to do it on a 4-pin relay?
Thanks for the diagram/drawing!

unless its a N/O relay then no
your 4 pins will be coil power +&- and your switch circuit N/O = normally open N/C= normaly closed on a 5 pin relay you have the choice to use either N/O or N/C pins

Goto a junk yard and start pulling relays from 80s/90s Jap cars and German cars. Cheaper than the ones you buy instore and better quality. Ze Germanz use lots of high quality relays so their the best bet, and you'll find lots of BMW's and Benz's from the 80s if you find a yard that carries older models.
If you're doing it at the same time as buying something else, you may even get them free. Or... You know. Cargo jeans/really deep tool box with the purchase of something else. What are you doing with this circuit?

It's security related, and I'll leave it at that. Don't want certain things on the internets.

Well, considering your car is light enough to be carried, I wouldn't worry much

Along the lines of what tex said, nissans from early 90s well into the 2000s used the relay you need. You need a NC (normally closed) relay so that the contacts open when you supply power to it and close when the power is interrupted. There is a way to do it with a NO relay but it involves resistors and is too complicated for what your after. Your best bet is to find a NC relay. If I remember right, most of the nissan ones have both options or like everyone else said, get a 5 pin relay as they have both options as well.

Any car can be towed, but I want to get the car to the point where it has to be towed for it to be taken.

so the effect your basically trying to achieve is lets say something that will turn the lights on when the cars on and the turn them off when the cars off. without you having to do anything but turn the key...
so your trying to lock all four wheels...electric ebrake...? you figure out what relay you need and i can pull one for you and mail it off if you dont have easy access to a JY

And not really on the lights. I want it so that if current it flowing to the relay, the lights are off. But if there's nothing flowing the the relay, the lights are on.

Also remember on problem here. If your main power is cut, whatever is supposed to turn on through a NC relay will no longer work. Unless of course you use a separate power supply to feed the NC interlocks

The things I need only need to come on once for the car to come on, after that it's fine. And if there's no main power, the car isn't starting anyways.
