WEll, it truly depends on your Terrain. Here is basically a general layout that you should follow when getting into Offroad R/C. This isn't meant to maek your decisions for you, but to act as a guide to help you for what you are looking for, if you have any more questions, just ask.

Terrain:

Extreme terrain: Mud, Large Rocks, Tall Grass,4"+ Obstacles, Low Traction, big jumps
For this I would recommend a 1/10-1/8 scale monster truck. 4x4 is a must.
The E-Maxx or T-Maxx are two great R/c monster trucks with plenty of aftermarket, the savage also works. Price Range is around $250-$500

Rough Terrain: Tall Grass, rocks, 2"-4" obstructions, light mud, gravel, jumps.
I would recomend a 1/10 scale truck, 4x4 is preferred but 2wd will be just fine. I would recomend something along the lines of a Traxxas Stampede, or an HPI Wheely King 4x4. A Traxxas Stampede is a long proven truck with tons of aftermarket, and the Wheely King has 4x4 lots of suspension travel and it is also fairly cheap, aftermarket for the wheely king is pretty good. Price Range is around $150-$250

Mild Terrain: Grass, Gravel, 1"-3" Obstructions, Pavement, light sand, very light mud, race track, dirt.
For this terrain any vehicle around 1/18-1/10 should do. 2wd is perfectly fine for this terrain, but 4x4 is always welcome but definately 4x4 if you are going to run a 1/18. I would recommend something like the Traxxas Slash/Rustler or maybe a Duratrax DT. For 1/18 scale I would recommend maybe an RC18MT. The Traxxas Rustler and Slash have TONS of aftermarket for them, much like the stampede, the Duratrax DT is fairly new, but it is based off the Evader, which is a sturdy chassis and comes with a Stresstech Gaurantee so they will replace broken parts. The RC18MT was an early contender into the 1/18 scene and also has much aftermarket and handles fairly well for a 1/18. Price Range is $100-$200
