4WD, with solid axles front and rear. The stock drivetrain must use delrin gears, they've never failed or have had any real signs of wear during the past 10 years. It's plenty beefy. Plus the motor will run out of torque before the drive train gets put under much stress. Plus the rear end has a high/low range selector, so it's pretty well set for on and off road. Stock in high gear it did probably 12 mph, a good low running speed.
Though with the bum batt. pack I have no idea of how the new ESC helps with performance.
