How do FETS work?

How does a FET work? I was thinking about that yesterday, trying to make a fet from scratch. I know what they do, and what they are for, but how do they work. whats inside them? Anyone know how fets work or whats inside them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_effect_transistor It's not a great tech description for non-engineers, but a nice readable description of how they actually work may be hard to come by.

What's inside them is the same thing that's inside a Pentium or Athlon or other microchips, as this is exactly what FETs are is a microchip. The FETs you're talking about only have a few big transistors which are optimized for high-current. A Pentium has hundreds of millions of basically the same transistors but much smaller, and today optimized for low-power consumption.
