dogbones.

im planning on locking my back differential, and my little brother did it earlier today and snapped a dogbone in his car. i was wondering if putting a layer or two of tape around the middle dogbone could help make it stronger?

zippo855 04-30-2009 10:38 PM

i have seen some people put epoxy on the dog bone to strengthen it. but you can always get alloy dog bones to put in it.

jamescorbett 04-30-2009 11:11 PM

they dont make alloy dogbones that fit with the offroad kit, do they?

zippo855 04-30-2009 11:18 PM

you can use swing shafts. i have one setup with them. and theres a few members that have them as well

jamescorbett 04-30-2009 11:20 PM

i know i may sound stupid, but im new to this. what are swing shafts?

zippo855 04-30-2009 11:22 PM

they are the dogbone and wheelstub in 1. they allow the dogbone to sit into the diff better. go to ebay and type in xmod swingshaft

Pwnzor1130 04-30-2009 11:24 PM

Swing Shafts are shafts that swing! No, they're kind of like dogbones and axle stubs in one. Here's a picture!

Wow, two minute difference.

jamescorbett 04-30-2009 11:30 PM

zippo855 05-01-2009 12:26 AM

they should work great

kendallcschm 05-01-2009 05:16 AM

..... how come when i asked this no one told me about swing shafts?? lol

Scionbeave 05-01-2009 02:38 PM

I use stock dogbones in my lift kits as I have snapped the liftlit ones and the work the same without slipping at all.

Anyone know if you have to remove those plastic rings to fit the bearings in the picture above? I had them arrive today and the plastic bits are on tight, i dont wana cut them off if they are supposed to be there.

Sorry to bump an old thread but i didnt wanna start a whole new thread just for one question, and YES i did search but couldn't find info relating to this exact question.

65mustangrock 11-25-2009 04:18 PM

the plastic holds the pin that holds the dogbone in the cup. so you cant get rid of it.

reaper 11-25-2009 05:08 PM

get your nails behind it and gently slide the ring off , pop on the bearing and carfully put the ring back on :)

they are tight but do come off

Ska_Ranger 11-26-2009 06:59 AM

Cheers Reaper.

ahhaa lol, i dont have nails so a pair of pliers and job done, um ok blonde moment possibly....

The rear knuckle arms i fitted fine, except unless something is missing or i made a mistake - more likely, the rear wheels can actually be pulled away from the body, dogbones and all, there are 3 bolts on the front of each knuckle, should there be a cover to go there? if so, i cant find one. I have modified a brake disc from the stock parts for now but it looks gash.

link to pic of bit i mean:

Forgot some bearings? Missing spacer? Top screw not put in correctly? Your imagination?

Ska_Ranger 11-26-2009 01:14 PM

Nope, everything is in, bearings, spacers, screws but nothing actually holds the dogbone and bearings into the knuckle so at high speed the wheels begin to pull out.

reaper 11-26-2009 05:03 PM

sounds like you have used the wrong screws , the head should just lap over the edge of the bearing so stopping them pulling out
