Project: Zmod Track Car

Hey guys, here is my latest work, I don't have a lot of time, but I managed to put a decent project together. The reason for the mini-z rear pod because it is going to be 2WD and I wanted it to have better handling, therefore mini-z rear pod.

So Far:
Bearings
Mini-z PN Racing rear pod
CF Chassis made by me
Lithium Ion Square kit made by me
GPM A-arms up front
GPM upper deck
Speedy 07 (temporary)
Upgraded differential and gears

To Come:
HS-55
Mini-Z or Micro T electronics ( need your guyses opinions)
rims
tires

I have to create a plastic deck to put the electronics on, that will lay on top of the batteries.

Here are some pictures:

The chassis is real long so either I'm going with a model body, or a 1/24th lexan body. This is possibly my cleanest project so far, so stay tuned for this one :)

Help me decide on whether I should go mini-z or micro-t electronics.

Edit: Fixed the gigantic pics, sorry bout that.

wait.. it looks like a generation 1 front end and a mini-z rear end?
thats genius. well... since its a Zmod you have to go mini-z electronics or else youll have to change it to zmod-t lol jk but seriously stick to the name! :D tehe

i see problemm..... you have round axles in back and D axles in front! what are you gonna do about that?

very clean indeed, nice work with the rear pod! RedsXmodder did one on gen 1 too but your using a carbon chassis which is very nice! i suggest going with the Micro-t board as it is cheap, has a 2x2 stock fet(not stacked, but on the opposite sides of each other) its efficient, and on ebay the board and servo combo is very cheap(got mine with a remote as well for $39). its a real no brainer to install too, but i am going to post up a tut soon when i do my clean/rebuild if you need help. as for a Z board they are pricey and i wouldnt know how to wire up the servo and what kind to use in this gen 1. good luck, maybe you can find a JGTC model car and use it. it'd be a crazy fast and nice racecar :)

you could get a sheet of PARMA lexan to make the PCB tray (use a thin sheet) - http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/par/par...source=froogle

Here is an inexpensive PCB (RV for mini-z) (I have 3 of these) - http://www.miracle-mart.com/store/in...oducts_id=2217

It is indeed a clean chassis you have there.

IMO You should try to get it back to a 98mm wheelbase and go with a pancar body since you wanted better handling.

Otherwise, great work, keep it up!

I really hope you drilled those T-plate mounting holes extra carefully because the car will drive sideways otherwise...

But overall it looks great! Very clean assembly and good work with the disk damper.

Haha, yeah I took like 20 minutes to line those up perfectly, I even sanded down the part of the CF where the holes are so it sits at the height I want it.

Thanks for the Mini-z Board Link, I'm just debating on micro-t/mini-z.
As for the upcoming update, I will have some rims and tires, nothing special.

I gotta measure the wheelbase and I'll get back to you guys.

i'd go with the miniZ board over the microT one. the reverse delay sucks and it's nice to have brakes.

RedSXmodder 01-29-2009 03:56 PM

Copycat. ;)

Its race time.

I mounted some electronics that I traded for with my friend that lives down the road. And they are... Micro-t! I just have to get my hands on an HS-55, then I'm set for elecs. I also got new knuckles for the front, as one didn't have the thing that attaches for the wheel.

I changed up the battery mounting position, and now there is loads of room for an HS-55 to be put in there. I just need to learn how to get a new servo on to a Micro-t board :)

As for a rim update, I have some rims that I'm gunna paint.

I apologize for the blurry pics, they are rushed, cause I'm doing schoolwork and stuff, so I gotta be movin fast.

I also replaced the titanium upper deck with CF.

fieldfairy2 01-29-2009 07:07 PM

I think mini z elecs would be a better choice, but for the money micro t is great. I would get a stock micro t servo with the saver. it is smaller than an hs-55 and hooks right up to the board, i think it is the same price too. (check you lhs or losipartshouse.com, just search losi parts house on google). I get mine for $11 but they sell for $15 or $14, the crystal housing isn't supposed to be bent at an angle... Otherwise it is great, very clean and good luck

WhiteCharisma 01-29-2009 07:09 PM

well you dont need an HS-55 because a micro t servo would plug right in and thats fine. i use one and i have no problems with it. looking very nice so far, lol i bet when you race with ppl with this car they would question what type it is, then you show them and they still wont know what it originally is because its so custom :p

acerpower 01-29-2009 07:26 PM

looks good. i like the cf upper deck better than the titanium one too.
did you measure the wheelbase on it yet? that thing is going to be a rocket with the speedy 07 and lipo.

himynamebebrian 01-29-2009 09:17 PM

where did you get the cf chassis bottom. i cant find them like that anywhere.

merc3des 01-29-2009 09:42 PM

I sell em, check my services thread. I'll sell you one for $40 paypal, shipped.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys! Just finished painting the rims, I'll post updates later.

merc3des 01-30-2009 04:06 PM

Sorry for the double post, I painted the rims and such, and I will have pics up by 7:00 PM. This project is really coming together :)

I am also going to showcase the COG, and the weight saved with CF.

merc3des 01-31-2009 12:44 PM

UPDATE:

Hey guys, I painted the rims, got some tires, and have a steering arm now. All thats left for electronics is to put on the servo. I relocated where the steering goes in, and it gives it a stiffer feel, and smoother A-Arm movement.

The rims do not match, I'm getting a new set don't worry.

Hopefully I'll have a video up soon.

I do have one problem, the screws that hold on the disk damper system, scratch the ground sometimes with the suspension compresses, any suggestions?
