lol, look at the lil' ricer neon in the second pic.

Engines pics. Kthnx. ;-)
|
this picture is almost exactly 2 years old......but the only things that have changed are the intake, battery, and a couple wiring things.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...x/PICT1825.jpg looks pretty stock don't it? |
well, I just spent all day this last sunday at an open lapping/AutoX event. had a ton of fun, learned a lot, and had a professional driver drive my car for a few laps. The guy who wrote this is an instructor with the Northstar BMW club, which regularly puts on major events at Brainerd International Raceway. He also won the last AutoX I was at in an STi (Corvette club event, also pics and vids of that in the Real car section).
"So I'll start with my favorite, its Black, its looks like it enjoys playing in the mud, and climbs hills and sounds a lot like Big Foot from the Monster Truck derby. I guess my mentallity when testing out a car is simple, find the most speed while maximizing the most traction. And in the case of Chux's Wagon, let’s just say it was a lot of fun trying to accomplish that goal. First thing you'll notice about this car is its ride height; she sits much higher than most Subaru's I'm familiar with. She's got some nice long legs on her, she's not much to look at, but she's got experience. The old girl really knows how to work the Subaru AWD system, going thru the fast sweeping corners you can literally feel all four just clawing around constantly searching for traction. She didn't complain much diving into the fast chachains, rotated quite well even with the body roll as if she just tiptoed around the tight corners. The understeer is noticeable; but with the right amount of braking you can easily get her to rotate just fine, just have to be a little patient and wait for it. The power from the NA boxer engine felt like a great combination for this setup as the suspension felt soft which I think this car is intended for offroad ventures. So I am surprised how well she did on our little tight course. I felt comfortable using the brake on this car, but than again I don't usually use the brakes very often. LOL Okay I kid, but I think this car was one who had the least issues with wheel hoping while braking when transitioning coming into the fast chachain where there was uneven pavement from two different compounds. Something’s worth mentions, perhaps stiffening the shift with some bushings to help the driver quickly figure out the gears, a little more brake bite would make it even more fun coming into the corners and simple 4 point harness to help keep the driver in place. Overall I think it’s a fun car to drive around no matter where you take it just the way it is. Did I mention I really like rumpping on the throttle, the exhaust nodes is what really reminded me of the Monster Trucks. Many Thanks, -Cheech" pictures: http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...g/IMG_1809.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...g/IMG_1817.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...g/IMG_1813.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...1/S7301112.jpg video.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y92IaEWGG2s |
hahaha love subarus i like how your racing with a trailer hitch gives it a little bit more of a sleeper look you know.

HUNGRY FOR CONCRETE!!! Quite the nose dive lol As for your super secret plans... Supercharrrrger!(?) |
Nice car, hopefully the engine has been cleaned since you took the photos awhile back.
Oh, and the had braking image (here) reminds me of the 2005 Mitsubishi ad showing all the cars bowing down to the new model Eclipse. |

Prior to my current car, all my engines were clean enough to eat off.
Makes it easier to work on them when they are clean, plus they look better. lol |
ordered some go-fast bits earlier this week.
also started drawing up initial designs for a custom gauge cluster. 9 gauges (water temp, oil pressure, oil temp, boost, tach, AFR, speedo, volt, and fuel) in the stock cluster. stock: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/S7301133.jpg new design: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/S7301129.jpg with trim: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/S7301131.jpg I already have an Innovate G2 AFR gauge in my car. and I intend to use Autometer Ultra-lite II gauges for the rest to match. G2: http://www.diyautotune.com/images/pr...g2daynight.jpg ultra-lite IIs: http://images.superstreetonline.com/...ight_gauge.jpg |
Go fast bits better be belt driven and better really suck.

I'm told it's boxed up and ready to ship on monday. and it's only coming from the other end of the state, so it should only take a couple days. then I'll reveal. |
got a few new parts....and ordered some more
got a Link LEM v4 standalone ECU. and an Audi 2-wire IAC valve. also, received and assembled (yea, it came as a pre-printed board and a bag full of components....) this little toy from Australia: https://secure.vividcluster.crox.net...Large_7566.jpg it's a programmable voltage switch. it detects a voltage on one circuit to control a relay. can be used for nitrous, rad fan(s), warning lights, etc. etc. etc. |
did ya have to go with a link? lol man i hate that set up.
but either way atleast its getting tuned! |
Quote:
especially when this one cost $250  |
well **** cant beat 250 bucks!! link has just never been my favorite, i hate tuning with it. but everyone has their personal preference. ive just heard a lot of negatives about link from other people as well.
have you ever tried a utec or aem? ive even found the cheap cobb more fun to play with. took a friends 98 legacy turbo swap with link from 285 whp to 313 whp with nothing but going utec, losing the front mount for a large top mount, new injectors, and of course a retune. his link would keep sending his tune sour every time he had it redone, it would eventually go to ****. but it would only go so far and then stop. it was weird. so you going turbo or super? theres a 94 legacy wagon around here that runs both. car looks like total *** but makes like 370 whp!! its freaking nuts. sad thing is he breaks it every time he runs it. its soo jimmy rigged |
Quote:
my only worry is this is an older unit that doesn't have an intake air temp sensor, so can't correct for different air temps. I'll probably have to have at least 2 different maps for different parts of the year. coolest thing is they have closed-loop lambda control. tell it what AFRs you want, and it'll auto-tune your map to get you there. FYI, Doug's wagon is a 1990. |
Quote:
i work with to many freaking numbers a day, i get em all confused hahaha. either way yeah that thing is sick. but every time ive seen it on the dyno or on the track he bust the poor thing. and zip ties galore! lmao |
alright, so I had planned to be a bit secretive about this.....but it's going to be a rather long-term project (hope to have it up and running by next summer though), so screw it....
Few weeks ago, I bought this: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/S7301250.jpg As I mentioned earlier, it's a v4 Link LEM ECU. mmmmmmmmm........still need a few things before it'll be fully usable, but the bulk of it is here. not bad for $250. also came with 2 02 sensor, and EGT sensor, and a coolant temp sensor. and a harness that looks like it's supposed to be plug and play for something, but despite the fact that it says "subaru" on the sticker on the unit itself, the plugs on the harness don't look like anything I've ever seen. And after studying the manual for it, I realized it's only designed to control a 2-wire Idle-air solenoid. and subarus are 3.....so I picked up this on ebay for $10. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/S7301248.jpg from a '90 Audi 200. 2 wire, and doesn't mount right to the intake. shouldn't be too hard to fab a flange to bolt to the subaru intake where the old IAC was, and plumb this in there. then, this showed up...... http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/S7301246.jpg an Eaton M62 Supercharger from a '00 Mercedes C230. only has 25k miles on it. I took the intake and exhaust manifolds off it and polished them on the wire wheel on my bench grinder. now they're all shiny  . I also re-mounted the high-pressure one 90* from where it was stock so it points more towards where the subaru tb is. you can see the line that I drew on it, where I plan to cut it off, and weld a plate over the hole to only use the one output. from the back: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/S7301247.jpg again, line drawn where I'll cut off the low-pressure manifold. a few measurements, and it looks like a 3.5" coupler will fit perfectly over that spot. then I noticed the little chunk of heater hose left over from the new water pump on the '96 imp motor I put in the '86 wagon. I used it to put the IAC valve right off the blower: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/S7301249.jpg ideally, you'd want it on the low-pressure side, but any time the valve is open, the blower will be off, so it shouldn't be a problem. Also, I've got a Jaycar voltage switch, that will be calibrated to engage the blower at ~75% throttle. https://secure.vividcluster.crox.net...Large_7566.jpg plan is, to get my hands on a dual-port phase I EJ22e. partial rebuild (rings if necessary. but certainly headgaskets, all seals, timing belt, pumps, etc.). Leave it at stock N/A compression Delta Cams, possibly head work phenolic intake mani spacers t-leg intake manifold and injectors possibly parallel fuel rails keep my existing exhaust (mmmmmmmmmm) use this AWIC, plumbed between the blower and TB. should keep piping down (click image for more specs): http://www.siliconeintakes.com/image...20_picture.jpg another voltage switch controlled by an intake air temp sensor to control the water pump for said AWIC stock pulleys should yield 4-5 psi I'm also planning on mounting 3 LEDs on the dash. one for the supercharger clutch, one for the AWIC pump, and the third for the radiator fan. mounting system originally planned to be something like this: http://www.vincentfurniture.com/phot...front-view.jpg but then a different setup just appeared on rs25 (which, of course, just switched servers, so I can't access the picture to post here...). so things might get switched around before then. also, there will be paint involved on the new engine. still trying to think of a color scheme..... |
Wow.... looks like someones going to be busy for the next year....
Very impressive man! |
why didnt you go kenne bell!
JK! awsome plans, cant wait to see em come together! but man i still hate link haha. what about a dark grey and bronze for the engine color scheme? i think dark grey on the heads and block with a nice bronze intake manifold would look killer! |
oh hey! i just remembered a buddy has the block your looking for. bare bones nothing in else, block only. i think he was asking 50 bucks for it. but shipping would be killer of coures, and probably would kill the sale. but if you cant find anything up there, and your interested LMK.

because i thought of it some time later? and i didnt think to go to the last page, and edit my last post. |
the other mounting setup I mentioned earlier:
http://www.ludicrous-speed.com/g2/ma...serialNumber=2 |
a Group A throttle body spacer arrived at my house last week. I installed it yesterday. Very noticeable shift in the torque curve. gobs more low end grunt....lovin it!
I hope to dyno it in this relatively stock setup within the next month or so to get a baseline before I go nuts this winter. |
anticipation bump.....just spent a #@$%#$^load of money the last couple weeks. will be so worth it. as far as I know (and I've been a regular on numerous nationwide subaru forums for years.....NEVER heard of one), this is the first subaru part of it's kind to EVER land in North America. very common in Australia (where this one came from, out of a '91 Subaru Liberty GX) and Europe. but never available in North America and probably not Japan either (but concrete info about that is hard to come by).
will be a couple weeks, probably, before that actually arrives.... will also be going to get a "new" motor tomorrow. since I'm planning a full rebuild, and head-work, I just needed a used-but-good block to rebuild so I don't have to have the wagon entirely out of commission for months. |
|
nope, factory subaru part. and I already have a blower.
and no, no burnouts. I prefer traction, thanks. |
Picked up a motor and FWD 4EAT from a '90 legacy with about 180k miles on them for $100. appears that the motor was cared for fairly well while it was in the car, but has been stored very poorly. so some brackets bent/broken, and a few things dried/rusty (mostly tbelt pulleys). Started tearing it down the last few days:
got it unloaded, and started taking some things off to ease the trip down into the basement: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0348.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0349.jpg Subaru timing belt.....possibly original  http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0351.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0352.jpg got it in the house, and set up on the bench: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0355.jpg a table just for the engine: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0356.jpg pulled the flex plate, and found this......somebody must have dropped it through the access panel. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0358.jpg one of the mounts where the PS bracket bolts to the block is broken. nothing behind it though, so I'm thinking I'll tap threads in there, and run a slightly longer bolt. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0361.jpg still got the crosshatching: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0363.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0364.jpg Came with a power steering pump, pulled it apart, and it's in great shape. which is awesome, because mine is.....well.......not http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0369.jpg |
parts purchasing is still mostly on hold. picking up some new fenders and other cosmetic parts in the Cities this weekend. but next paycheck.....should mostly go to rebuild parts. either that or I'll save up to put towards sending my Heads/cams to Delta
But, did some work tonight. Basement looked like this when I came up awhile ago: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0386.jpg cut the un-needed parts off the supercharger plenums (see the whole parts bolted to the blower above): http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0388.jpg now looks like this: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0398.jpg keeping the little piece to help pull air around the corner (I don't know if it's really necessary....but mercedes thought it should be there......so I'll leave it). http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0399.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0400.jpg and this: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0397.jpg also cut a piece of sheet aluminum to block off the hole on the high-pressure side: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0396.jpg was going to alumiweld it on there.....but couldn't get it hot enough. might have to find a better way to insulate it from the vise. got the freeze plug out: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0402.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0389.jpg and block heater ready to go in: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0401.jpg got the rear access panels off: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0403.jpg so, what the heck, pulled the pistons too: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0387.jpg 1 & 3 http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0393.jpg 2 & 4 http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0394.jpg some scoring on the skirt of #2. but not too bad (almost cannot be felt....I bet once I clean it up, you'll hardly be able to see it) http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0392.jpg topside of #4 cylinder http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0391.jpg #2 http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0390.jpg some signs of contact/friction. but not any deeper than the crosshatching. so I think some fresh rings/hone will solve that "issue". next I have to buy a 12-point 12mm to split the case. then the parts to reassemble.... |
put together a list of all the parts I need yet....the number at the end scared me a bit :o probably won't be done as soon as I had hoped. unless I can find a cheaper clutch that will work well.
anyway, a few more pictures... case split: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0413.jpg soaking the halves in the wash tub: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0416.jpg a little SeaFoam and a wire-wheel shined up the pistons real nice http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0411.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...n/DSCF0412.jpg once clean, the scoring on the #2 piston skirt looks better. but still kinda nasty. but doesn't interfere with the ringlands at all....so I don't think it'll be an issue. although does make me happy that I pulled the shortblock apart. |
What are you using as the supercharger?
Looks good so far.. |

got the XT6 tranny crossmembers today. which will allow me to put an EJ-series tranny in it  |
What are you using in the wash tub for the halve, just soapy water, are chemicals (if chemicals, what kind, a friend of mine likes to open up old engines and sell them for parts). I told him he can just spray everything with Seafoam Deep Creep, but thats like $8.+ a small can. I was told putting some zmax on a shop rag and cleaning the pistons and cyl. will make it smoother but wont make the deep scratches disappear, is that ture?
It looks like your project is coming along well. Any updates on the body or chassis? Suspension? |
the wash tub is just hot water and lots of dish soap. I had already used a can of Deep Creep and about an hour with a nylon brush to get most of the grease off, but wanted to get the rest of the dirt and stuff off.
nothing to report on the rest of the car. starter brushes finally failed on my XT6, so the wagon is serving DD duty again this week. hopefully that'll change tomorrow (unless NAPA ordered the wrong parts.....). almost entered it in a car show this weekend, but with the XT6 down, and we got snow last night, I didn't have a chance to get my summer wheels and front lip back on. so it's pretty ugly. |
chux i have to say that i love your wagon. this shows your true creativity and abilities. good job and keep it up!
