XXX: Project Rusty Bug

Well, this is my new project and I have a lot of passion for the build.. I am converting my Rustler chassis to a Buggy.

With the high cost of all the parts, you may ask... why not just buy a Buggy? Well, that's no fun and I got a Rustler roller sitting here doing nothing.

I did some google searching and found a bunch of similar conversions. Here is a Link to a sweet Rustler to Buggy Conversion by: Jones8352 on the Traxxas Forums.
http://traxxas.com/forums/showthread...-Rustler-buggy

My build will be similar, however I will be using a proline Bulldog B44.1 body instead of the Crowd Pleazer.

The paint scheme, will be: Body- WHITE, black, pink baby blue.. a bit of yellow.. I will use a Yellow Proline wing, like in the above thread. Brushless, 2.4ghz ..etc, etc.

I will probably be getting part by part slowly, so the build should take awhile..... OR NOT.

Awesome, Drop the integy shock tower and get an STRC one, drop the VXL and get A Sidewinder SCT system, and your all set to go =D Happy modding!

Ill checkout the STRC tower, but I went with the VXL to save some $, I plan to upgrade it later when some more cash comes.. I figured I could find a VXL at a good price because Im sure people have pulled them from there Traxxas trucks to upgrade. We'll see, If I can get enough cash Ill get a better Brushless system. Did you check out the thread I posted of the other conversion.? it's sweet.

dreamingISdrifting 01-03-2011 01:26 AM

Just for the record, Integy is a hit or miss company, you either get quality parts or buttery weak ones. And the sidewinder is a good $30+ cheaper than the VXL for a new system, and much more powerful and flexible, http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXAETT&P=ML , and No, I havent seen your other conversion, I will have to check it out =)

Oh didn't realize it was cheaper.. Ill definately check it out. It wasn't my conversion... in my first post of this thread I put a link to a thread that someone else did with doing a Rustler-Buggy conversion... it has photos and it is sweeeeeet.. scroll up, hit the link and check it. Thanks did for the help... Im 100% new to brushless.

Little update.. My order should be here Saturday or Monday.. can't wait to start building. Im also ordering a new Tamiya TB-03 1/10 Rc car kit.. can not wait to start assembling that one.

dreamingISdrifting 01-14-2011 05:34 PM

Awesome, its nice to see this project coming together! Everything should be pretty good! What Sidewinder system did you get? It doesnt matter which one you got cause it will keep make happy either way, but the 5700 will run a tad hotter. And make sure to keep your Pinion/Spur gear slightly lubed! Metal on metal meshing likes to heat up so it will help out a bit, Integy Spurs are known to strip when hot, I dont speak from personal experience but I'm sure it should be fine.

mycrors4 01-14-2011 05:46 PM

according to the part number he got the 5700kv

ill be watching this build, looks like its gonna be good

Yeah I got the 5700kv... I was going to go with the 4600kv for more control and handling... but I pulled up the gear/speed chart from castle creations and decided that If I want to tone the speed down, I can just change the spur pinion set-up.. but if I want I can get this going up to 60mph..

Any suggestions on monitoring temperature.. I have an old digital temp gauge from my nitro days... Do you have a suggestion on the lube. Thanks guys.

dreamingISdrifting 01-14-2011 06:58 PM

When your stuff arrives, just take some temp checks on the motor from the first one or two runs. 145*-170* is usually optimal temps when driving, anything 175~*+ is starting to push the motor, but chances are if your not racing it or are doing ballistic speed runs it shouldn't be an issue. Just remember that the outside of the motor will almost be in all scenarios, cooler than the inside. IF its under 145* you could gear up and not worry about it, but if its any higher than 175* gearing down is to be considered. As for the lube, I would recomend MOO Slick, it works really well and keeps the dirt form bulding up. Otherwise a very thin film of lithium grease or black grease will be fine.

TripleXmodder(akaXXX) 01-14-2011 10:02 PM

So if im suppose to check the temperature inside, how do you check it.

mycrors4 01-14-2011 10:07 PM

well, think of it this way, if its 150f degrees outside, its ~15-20 degrees hotter inside, making it 170 degrees

you want the inside to stay under 180, so try to stay below 160F for the outside temp, there is no way to tell how hot the inside is unless u take apart the motor, and by the time you do that, it woulda cooled down

dreamingISdrifting 01-14-2011 11:51 PM

Basically what Mycro just said. It's like being outside with a jacket on, obviously inside of the jacket is hotter than the outside of the jacket. Just give it some 10*-15* leeway of heat, and estimate what your motor is running at.

TripleXmodder(akaXXX) 01-18-2011 06:45 PM

Ok, first off let me start by saying.. Im a doof.. I had a Brain Fart when I decided on the bulldog body.. becasuse it is a 1/10 body, and Im converting this into 1/8.. So I decided to go with the Proline slip stream.. I love this body even more anyway. Here she is...
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...family/538.jpg
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...family/536.jpg

And to my EXCITMENT.. a HUGE box of stuff arrived yesterday.. I started the assembly but I wait a little bit before I get those photos up.
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...-17_175048.jpg

TripleXmodder(akaXXX) 01-19-2011 05:52 PM

If there is anyone left around whos interested... I have an update (LOL)

So, I got the STRC chassis all mounted on the stock front and rear end.. Simple enough even though the STRC kit was missing some screws and I had to search around for some that would work.
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...-17_192621.jpg
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...-17_204629.jpg
A shot of the rear end with the Sidewinder and wheelie bar.
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...-17_204642.jpg
And the Integy Spur, and I got the Red aluminum adjustable camber links on all 4 corners..
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...-18_123153.jpg
Made a battery tray with the parts the STRC came with (cut one side open) and some velcro strap instead of the clip downs (SUCK) Also I made a tray for the ESC to sit on, from an Xmod case (So there is a little Xmod in this..Kinda)
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...-18_123143.jpg
This is a temporary tray for my receiver.. I got a waterproof traxxas case on the way.
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...-18_130656.jpg
Oh yeah, the Servo is in.. Just need the saver..
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...-18_132221.jpg
An overhead shot of everything..
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...-18_132229.jpg
Got the wing mounted, and that's about all I can do until I get the rest of the stuff....
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...-18_143438.jpg

So Im gonna be doing the front widening mod to this... Basically putting rear arms up front... here's a good read.. the tutorial of the mod by Jang: http://www.ultimatetraxxas.com/misc/...pede-wide-mod/

I plan on dropping to a 2s 7.4v Lipo and a 16T pinion so I don't drive through a brick wall...

I would really like to thank Jones8352 from the Traxxas site for helping me out on this build and giving me some good tips. Go up top to my first post and click the link to his Rustler Buggy... it's SWEEET.

TripleXmodder(akaXXX) 01-20-2011 03:20 PM

AWSOME... got my 17mm wheel adapters and wheels in the mail today....

niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiicee!

but one question, the strc chassis is a rustler chassis, the 1/8th body is the length and width of the slash chassis
are you gonna cut up the body a lot?

Good question... but the STRC LCG chassis is extended for the Rustler.. it is exactly 1 3/4" longer and it's wider then the stock Rustler chassis, The slipstream should fit nice with slight modification.. If you read in the description on this link, it says EXTENDED.. it is an Xtreme Racing Chassis. http://www.rcplanet.com/Xtreme_Racin.../XTR10619B.htm

mycrors4 01-20-2011 04:25 PM

ahh
so its technically a lcg /backslash build
