Car guy moment of zen

"It's what non-car people don't get. They see all cars as just ton-and-a-half, two-tons of wires, glass, metal and rubber. That's all they see. People like you or I know, we have an unshakable belief that cars are living entities. Not like a Toyota Carolla obviously, but a real... You can develop a relationship with a car. And that's just what non-car people don't get. Charles Babbage, the inventor of the computer in the 18th century talked about the unerring certainty of machinery. Ok, now the problem you have with the unerring certainty of machinery is that it is a machine. When something has follies and won't handle properly, that gives it a particularly human quality because it makes mistakes. And that's how you can build a relationship with a car that other people won't get."

Jeremy Clarkson, Love The Beast

If i'm not mistaken it looks like an older picture. With the white wheels not being powder coated and the headlight gone etc.. Either way it is fairly easy to grow a relationship. Mine has had many problems and people said I should have sold it but i'm attached to it knowing no other car can be my first car and such. Nice post

Yup it's a few years old now. This was the xmas after dropping in the motor, hence why there's nothing inside there but a motor

I've grown emotionally attatched to my dads truck, and the Corolla. With the truck, its a big, clumsy workhourse that has feelings. When I hit it, I appologize. When I'm driving the Corolla I'm not speaking but thinking "Okay girl, just nice and easy... Nice. Whoa, stay in stay in stay in! Nice little four-banger." and it doesnt seem wierd to me. I think most of it stems from the movie Herbie. I grew very attached to Herbie, and then the cars we owned all got personalities!

Clarkson may be an offesive oaf to some, who really doesnt seem anything like a philosopher, but this proves that he has a bit of it in there!

it's a beautiful thing when you know all the limitations of your car, can drive it better than anybody else because you know exactly how it handles, brakes, accelerates, etc... and that you can pop your hood and start throwing parts on the ground to get to the root of your problem and put it back together without even having to second guess where something goes or how it goes on.

I've never thought of that before, but this is true. I don't (easily) mix up bolts and parts on the CST10.

That must be nice. Every time I change my turbo I forget how it was done the time before. I've changed it 3 times on my car and 3 times friends cars (identical to mine).

Furthermore I never know whats wrong with my car I always have to figure it out. Also, it always takes me way too long to fix my car, like days sometimes.

As far as limitations, I don't know a lot about that because I rarely drive my car at its limits. I can however tell you that I'm very accustomed to the dimensions of my car, since I've only owned a non turbo eclipse and turbo talon for the last 8 years.

I do love my car though, because of all the memories of working on it and the time I put into it. Not to mention money...
