August '08-'09 Buildoff '87 Un-Turbo Toyota 4Runner
alright....well, I've had this truck for almost 2 years now, and have done nothing with it but paint the wheels and valve cover.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...4386Medium.jpg I bought it over thanksgiving break almost 2 years ago. the previous owner ran it WITHOUT OIL for 300 miles! so, yea, engine and turbo need rebuilt (that's right, most likely still usable....). I put new main and rod bearings in it and replaced the timing chain tensioners. but the knock/slap didn't go away, and then I noticed that the turbo was leaking oil like mad. so, I wiped my hands of the project for about a year. when I noticed a rusty truck of the same generation that had been run into a pole. I offered the guy $200, and we settled at $250. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...x/PICT3654.jpg complete with running n/a 4-cyl motor AND a 5-speed (should I decide to swap, although I do prefer the auto for the rock crawling). anyway, the parts truck has to be gone within the next 2 weeks.....so hopefully the white one will be resurrected very soon. plans for the next year. fix it, probably make it bigger (that will depend on whether or not I remain in the lower 48 next summer....). |
Nice white 4Runner never seen a 2-DR 4Runner...
|
ah, i'm jealous...i love old school 4 runners, however i'm not fully knowledgeable about toyotas, so, may i ask...is that a 22RE under the hood? that truck has the potential to be an amazing project, and i think it looks badass, great job on the wheel paint too...i like it. can you get more pics of the truck for is? under the hood, interior, angles and such...i'm very interested.
|
white one has a 22RTE (turbo). red is a regular 22RE.
I'll look for some more pictures. |

old lady? my mother? she doesn't have any say in the matter. nobody does, except the city. the license tabs expired yesterday. which means in a month they can mark it as an abandoned vehicle, at which point I'll have 2 weeks to do something or they'll impound it. of course, the white one sat for a year and a half with expired tabs on it before I got a notice.... |
is that a custom intake in that pic

and yea, even if it can move under it's own power, it has to have up-to-date tabs on it. And we junked the title, so I can't renew the tabs. also, the plates are clearly visible from the alley. no need to trespass. in fact, even if I could get it into the yard, I don't think there's a place on my lot that isn't easily visible from public property. it's a very small lot. did a bunch of work the last couple days. the engine/tranny/tcase/front diff (all as one big unit) are on the ground next to the parts truck. tomorrow I'll start separating engine from trans, and hit the engine with some degreaser (cause it's nasty :o ).
my camera is gone though....so no pictures. |

little bit of progress. parts truck (or what's left of it) finally went off to the crushers today, so I'll have room to turn the white one around and start getting the new motor in it. unfortunately, it wouldn't start today (-14*F when I went out at 10am this morning)....maybe tomorrow.

SURPRISE!!! an update.
spent the whole day today out working on it, the truck ran yesterday afternoon.... now it looks like this: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...0464Medium.jpg awww...what a cute little turbo. this baby should make me a pretty penny: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...0466Medium.jpg |
new motor is in!!!
still a lot to do before it's running, but it's bolted to the trans, and no longer held up by the hoist. no wiring hooked up, no intake manifold, no vacuum lines, no PS pump, no alt, etc. etc. my goal is to bring it to the local car meet on Tuesday  |
you gonna get a bigger turbo??
|

although I might rebuild the old motor and throw a supercharger on it  progress today: wiring hooked up (although apparently not all correctly, I went to make sure it would turn over and blew a fuse......****). upper intake manifold bolted on. alternator installed power steering pump installed all vacuum lines connected (couple might not be right. have to run out to a buddy's house and check his 4runner....). hood bolted up (supposed to snow again tomorrow......) |
radiator is in
turbo maf mounted to the N/A airbox a buddy was nice enough to weld an 02 bung in my header. header doesn't fit......apparently another issue with it being designed for an older truck. one of the primaries hits the torsion bar bracket for the front suspension (which wouldn't be there on a solid-axle truck). couldn't make it work. got frustrated and put the stocker in it. uber bummer :x BUT, it lives!!! my mystery electrical issue was just a low battery. put it on the charger for the night and all was well. turned it over, and it fired but stalled. poked around the engine bay, and noticed that one of the wires that crosses the engine bay to the igniter had broken (these pass right over the exhaust.....all 3 were very brittle). fixed that, and it fired right up. so I put the stock header on it, connected that to the existing exhaust (although the flex pipe I used was a bit too large, so it doesn't seal), filled the radiator, and let it run for awhile to check for leaks. one hose clamp needed tightening, and I have a small ATF leak from one of the lines to the tranny cooler. hopefully I can just tighten that.... anyway, while it was warming it up, I saw the ramps sitting there...... http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...0467Medium.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...0470Medium.jpg and I got the turbo off the old motor: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...0471Medium.jpg just have to bleed the brakes. and a keen observer will notice the vacant area in the front suspension......front diff is still in the shed. if only the weather wasn't supposed to be so incredibly crappy this weekend :( |
brakes bled
tranny line tightened, a bit (extremely hard to access....so it's barely finger tight, but the leak seems to have stopped). front diff is in steering stabilizer attached it's officially road-worthy. should make the open house at the offroad park here in MN on May 16. for the first time in 2.5 years. it left the alley, and under it's own power. I only drove it around the corner to park on the street in front of my house for awhile while I put new plugs in my mom's legacy.....but it still counts!! http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...0472Medium.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...0473Medium.jpg |
Glad to see it is all working out, Chux. Probably one of my favorite 'Yota's. :)
Cheers, Kyle. |

|
nice job...came out great...looks mean...like the ramp shots...very jealous btw
|
got the important mods done.....STICKERS!!!!
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...0489Medium.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...0488Medium.jpg and bought a breather filter for the PCV vent. and took an engine bay shot http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...r/DSCF0500.jpg I absolutely love that it says "turbo" on the intake manifold.....but there's very obviously no turbo :p |
it'll make for good fun when you're around drunks and they pass an hour of their time trying to point out which part is your turbo, the truck looks awesome man.
|
drove it up the north shore to Two Harbors for the evening yesterday. spent some time at Freeway speeds. cruises nice, no noises or vibrations.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...r/DSCF0505.jpg |

it's pretty funny. |
took it wheelin today. spent almost 8 hours on the trails (not counting the hour for lunch...). just awesome. I never got to wheel all day in the subarus, it was usually 4 hours, and then 4 hours to limp it home after whatever I broke (usually about an hour drive at the speed limit).
some pictures from the day, not really any action shots, it was cold and I was driving most of the time....but a few poser shots: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...9/DSCF0568.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...9/DSCF0570.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...9/DSCF0572.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...9/DSCF0576.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...9/DSCF0577.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...9/DSCF0586.jpg aftermath: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...9/DSCF0588.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...9/DSCF0592.jpg more: http://s26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...%20house%2009/ |
