Neat Trick for Painting Wheel Lips
I needed a way to paint some matching wheels for Project Axis, and I came up with this.
First, gather materials: ---Paint ---Airbrush [or rattlecan] ---Wheels ---Highlighter/Expo Marker http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...rs/LipTut5.jpg Now, cut off the bottom of the marker. If the marker is too small, add some tape until the lip of the wheel is the only thing showing. http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...rs/LipTut4.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...rs/LipTut3.jpg Next, shoot your base color, in my case, gunmetal: http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...rs/LipTut2.jpg Finally, put your marker on the wheel, taking care to center it. Shoot the lip color, in my case, yellow. http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...ars/LipTut.jpg And that's it! -LM |
very clever!! never woulda thought of that. id make the tape a little bit thicker, got a tad bit of over spray, but looks **** good!

another way guys, paint the rim then(of your color choice) then put a piece of masking tape, and trace the tape around the rim, once you have a circular trace, cut the tape and the rim will not be exposed for paint, only the lip.

That is a great trick, I will have to remember that when I paint rims on my next project. Thanks for the tut.
