xmodcanuck's 1st paint job - enzo ferrari

Well I got this back in March and I finally got all the stuff I needed to work on it. I've never painted anything like this before and I don't really have a place to do it at home so I figured I would spray it at work. There are a couple problems with that. I don't want to leave it at work because some idiot will surely knock it over and wreck it. And my work is dusty. So I had to figure out a way to get it home after I painted it that wouldn't cause damage to the paint. So I took a dummy chassis and mounted it to a wood stand. I made for the stand a swivel platform so I could mount the stand and spray into the exhaust of the paint booth. Lastly I made a plexi-glass dust cover so I could cover it all and bring it home.

Here's what I started with

Got it mounted and shaved the mirrors

And then in the paint booth

I am phenomenally happy with how it has turned out so far.

Q & C welcome.

The paint job looks very good. It's looks like your a natural painter lol and the plexi glass invention was a very good idea. Great project.

That's exactly what it is. IR transponder.

Thanks. In a previous job I did do some painting on a much larger scale so I have had some practice in the basic concepts already. And the plexi cover worked perfect.

Coffee anyone?????
http://i474.photobucket.com/albums/r...k/xmods669.jpg

It's time to paint the extras (light buckets, tailpipes, ferrari symbol, wiper) and once again I had to figure out a way to paint them and bring them home without them getting wrecked. So I glued the parts tree to a piece of wood, glued that to a coffee cup lid and then glued the lid to a piece of corian for weight. It worked perfect.

And time in the paint booth means the second color.....Orange. I was initially very disappointed with the results. I could still see the black and I ended up spraying the orange a bit thick. I figured I would just let it be and see what happened when it dried.

http://i474.photobucket.com/albums/r...k/xmods671.jpg

Coming home under cover.

http://i474.photobucket.com/albums/r...k/xmods672.jpg

But when I got it home and took off the tape the only real disappointment was the poor tape. Some orange bled through but the areas that looked thick at first seemed to settle down as it dried and I can live with it. I may redo some of the black when I do the front grills but a little wet sanding may take care of most of the seepage.

nice. what i thounk could have saved some trouble would be if you painted the orange first, then the black

Yep. I figured the taping would be harder than it was and even that would have been much easier if I had done the orange first. Oh well. This is all just practice at this point. I know my next paint job will go much smoother.

xmodcanuck 01-29-2011 09:03 PM

I wasn't happy with the way it looked and I guess I could brush on some black but I'm going to try a different method instead.

So after a lot of sanding and a fresh coat of paint I have this.

I'm going to throw some clear on it and the try the black again. I should have done it in this order in the first place.

Q & C welcome.

xmodcanuck 02-10-2011 11:43 PM

It might be hard to tell but the clear went on really well and now that it's dried a few days it is really smooth.

So after I laid down the clear I got some Tamiya tape and taped off all the areas I wanted to stay orange. Then I sprayed the black. And nothing good happened after that. After a bit of research I got some of this...

http://i474.photobucket.com/albums/r...k/xmods746.jpg

And did this.

http://i474.photobucket.com/albums/r...k/xmods747.jpg

After 3 days it came out 99.9% clean. I rinsed it thoroughly.
Then I sprayed 4 or 5 coats of orange (one coat - wait 5 min let it dry - next coat) and did the same with 4/5 coats clear. Now I have this.

http://i474.photobucket.com/albums/r...k/xmods755.jpg
http://i474.photobucket.com/albums/r...k/xmods756.jpg

I really like the look of what I was trying to do but I'm done with the black. I have something I'm going to try for some of the black accents but it doesn't involve any paint except for clear when I'm done.

Q & C welcome.

Nice job man even the first time it looked good:)

xmodcanuck 04-24-2011 02:47 AM

Well, I learned a lot through the whole procedure and this is kind of like redemption for putting up with all the s**t this paint job put me through.

And what's an update like this without a little mock-up. I still have a couple things to finish but I am happy with how this is turning out at this stage.

Did you dilute the degreaser before soaking your car in it?And that body looks really nice with those rims.

No diluting. I dumped the whole bottle in a container and put the body in. I scrubbed it every now and then over 3 days with a soft toothbrush. Here's what I read that made me choose this product. http://www.bonediggers.com/1-3/strip/strip.html

theoriganalRiD3R1967 05-02-2011 02:02 AM

Oh ok, thanks, i'll read it over

xmodcanuck 05-12-2011 11:27 PM

Well it took 4 months but it's finally done. I screwed up a lot. I did things backwards. I did things 2 and even 3 times. I even did a few things right. Most important is I learned a lot about painting and my skills at painting. Some things I still don't understand though. Like why my second coat of clear isn't as shiny as my first coat. HUH. Oh well. All things considered, it turned out pretty good.

And I'm really happy with how good the emblem and tail pipes look.
