Project: Full Pull

For those of you who grew up hearing the term, you probably already know what this project is about. For those who dont, here's what it means. In tractor pulling, full pull is a distance of 300ft or more. This is something I haven't seen done on here, so I figured I'd try it out. This will be my first actual project.

I will be attempting to make a 2wd drive pulling truck. i'll be using an Evo (car) chassis for this and a model 97 F-150 XLT body. Anyways, enough with the talk.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...l/PICT0011.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...l/PICT0013.jpg

Other plans include:
Locking the dif
upgrading the dog bones
and eventually making a sled to go with it (but that might be awhile...)

Comment, criticism and questions are welcome.

Looks like your off to a good start, can't wait too see some more updates.

96SVT281 06-13-2010 10:48 PM

I guess I grew up around it knew exactly what it was can't wait to see it finished.

pinsk17 06-13-2010 11:39 PM

Sounds like its going to be a sweet project. Can't wait to watch te progress.

Witty 06-14-2010 11:07 AM

Small update.

I have the rear mount made and it fits. Gotta figure out how to make the front mount. The clip is a little over 5 and 1/2 mm away from the bumper. I also made a cover for the bed.

Chassis is now extended, but with a cheap piece of plastic. I'll probably cut a small piece of metal and drill out small holes in it.

Bed cover is a good idea, since if I remember correctly they are like that in real life.

Witty 06-14-2010 11:26 PM

They do have a cover, but the back end of the body isn't as long, it has the wheel arch then it goes straight to the tailgate...or wat should be the tailgate >.>

http://www.tristatepullers.com/image...od2wdtruck.jpg

Im not gonna bother with cutting up the back end, i doubt this will be lifting the front wheels off the ground anyways, even if i get a sled made. Which reminds me, if someone comes across some deminsions for an NTPA sled, could you pass me the link?

mr.hotrod 06-14-2010 11:44 PM

i know a fellow that competes in the rail class, he would know the exact dimensions, I will get them from him and i will post them here

Witty 06-17-2010 08:56 AM

Thanks HotRod, I'd appriciate it. :)

I have a front mount for the body made, im not going to glue the bumper to the body until i get it paints. I can't decide what to paint it. I was thinking of the color scheme my truck has, two tone red and silver, but i was also thinking of black and silver... If you have any other ides for paint, feel free to leave them.

Bananabrain 06-17-2010 10:09 AM

Two tone would look great with black & silver.

Witty 06-17-2010 11:49 PM

I got it painted earlier today. I went with black and silver. The pics were taken after i got home from work, not the best lighting. I'll get some pics of it in it's "natural habitat" in the morning.

That truck looks amazing! Nice work so far, cant wait to see more, and may the force be with you, the force of the engine that is.

Bananabrain 06-18-2010 11:06 PM

Paint looks great, almost seems like the front wheels need to be wider to fill the wheel wells.

FloydfanYodaman 06-18-2010 11:18 PM

hey man your truck is looking great...nice paint scheme...and cool idea for a project as well...maybe treat us to some outdoor in the dirt shots?...will it be getting graphics or a funny name like some of the rigs have...i have seen tons of vintage funny car decals online that may work if you are thinking along those lines...lookin forward to your next update...and new pics too

maybe like this?

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-1-24-1-25-FL...item51915d4e2c

http://cgi.ebay.com/BigDawg-4x4-Mode...item255b3e125d

and one question...maybe shouldnt the rear of the truck sit up a little higher so as to expose more of the beefy rear tire?

Witty 06-18-2010 11:21 PM

They could be a bit wider, but how I'd go about doing that, I dont know >.>

I'm trying to figure out what to do for a motor, but I should prolly wait to figure that out when I make the sled...if i ever get around to it. And I have a question. Should this be considered 1/28th scale or 1/25th? *scratches head*

You could get some longer axels for the fron that would help a bit, or you could deep dish them.

As for the motor I would probable get a stage 1 with neo mags. So you have plenty of torque.

Here is a link for the longer axels:
http://www.xmodsinternational.com/Xm...heel-Stub.html

I believe you have to order two of them because I think it is $4.99 a piece.

Witty 06-20-2010 12:24 AM

I might just go with deep dish rims or something. I'll get some new pics up Monday.

Could you possibly give me a link to the right size neo mags?

Next step is to lock the dif. I'll be ordering some new dog bones later today. I just hope i dont break these stock ones before i get the new ones...

It's going to be a few days before I get some dirt pics. The forcast says thundrstorms from now until Wednesday. I got the dif locked yesterday and my dogbones ordered.

xmodsunlimited 06-21-2010 11:10 PM

that looks great so far!

Witty 06-23-2010 01:16 PM

well, the weather is stll crappy, so no outside pics today. But I do have pics. I have 2 bases to choose from for the sled.

Up first we hae a 1/64 scale trailer base. I do belive it is die-cast.
Plus side to the die-cast it'll be strong bt the down side is it's real heavy.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...l/PICT0024.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...l/PICT0026.jpg

The second base is a bit bigger and made out of plastic. Weaer but alot lighter.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...l/PICT0025.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...l/PICT0027.jpg

I ot some Neo mags order. Hopefuly i get those and my dog bones within the next week.

Bananabrain 06-23-2010 05:21 PM

Looks like a good start to the trailer. I would go for the plastic one since you can add plastic too it and make it stronger. The diecast it just heavy and never gets lighter.

lol 06-23-2010 09:18 PM

Or you can unbend paper clips and superglue them along the bottom. If you superglue 5 on each side, the thing is bulletproof*

Witty 06-23-2010 11:27 PM

I wont start work on the sled untill i get a set of blue prints for one of the big ones. If you cant get a set of deminsions HotRod, dont worry about it. Im going to a tractor pull on the 17, maybe i can talk to one of the people running the sled for a set.

While at work today, i let my mind wander (it happens in a factory...) and i might buy a second body and do a more traditional pulling truck body. I was thinking of painting it all pink and calling it "Twisted Panther" and use the Pink Pather on it.

Witty 06-27-2010 10:55 AM

i have a couple pics in the dirt. I'll try and get a couple dirt slinging pics when i get the new parts.

Outdoor pics look great.

mr.hotrod 06-27-2010 09:23 PM

Sorry witty, the guy failed me.... he couldnt remember them off hand, so you might just have to go after the sled with a tape measure lol, i would use the metal trailer personally, because it is Super heavy to begin with and so is the sled.

Witty 06-27-2010 09:42 PM

What I may do is try and combine both of them, have the width of the plastic one and the strength of the die-cast one.

I can see it now, me running after the sled with a tape measure. xD "Get back here!! Im not done with you!" *shakes fist*

Witty 06-30-2010 01:13 PM

Yesterday, I decided to make thisa 2 vehicle project. Im keeping the 2wd truck and addng a 4wd.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...l/PICT0031.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...l/PICT0032.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...l/PICT0033.jpg

Im thinking of stripping the paint and doin something different. The wheels are to big and narrow to be accurate, so i need to replace those. With what, I dont know. I'm guessing locking the dif would be a good idea.

Bananabrain 06-30-2010 08:22 PM

I would keep the paint the way it is. Also You should lock the rear and front diff, for maximum pulling power. Also a stage 1 motor with neo mags will work great in it. Also for tires you could lift it like they do in real life and then put some aoshima super swampers on it, or some sort of soft sticky tires for off road.

Here are a few links to a few different sets of tires on ebay that are made of super soft urethane rubber:

Aoshoima super swampers:

B/F Goodwrench tires. (Fit stock xmods truck rims):

Military tires:

or if you wanna go crazy:

And then some boggers:

Sorry for th long post but this should help some with the tires.

Witty 07-04-2010 05:17 PM

I have an update, but it isn't a pretty one.

I got my GPM axle stubs and dogbones today, but when I went to take out the old axle stubs... the knuckles broke...

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...l/PICT0034.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...l/PICT0035.jpg

For now, the 2wd truck is dead in the water. I'll order the parts for the 4wd tomorrow.

Bananabrain 07-04-2010 05:38 PM

Bummer. I would say order some GPM Knuckles. That way you won't have too worry about them breaking again.

Witty 07-04-2010 06:04 PM

Im going to when i order parts tomorrow. It's like someone glued those parts into the knuckle or something... *scratches head*

Witty 07-06-2010 01:53 PM

I ordered a set of tires, some new knuckles and a set of front dogbones for the 4wd (cant find a set for the rear.) I took the rear knuckles off of my R8 to replace the broken ones on my 2wd for now.

Went out and shot a couple quick videos of them in the dirt.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...h_CLIP0046.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...h_CLIP0047.jpg

THe 4wd wasn't very impressive if you ask me

dreamingISdrifting 07-06-2010 03:11 PM

Have you locked both your diffs?, The only other recommendations that I could say are more ground clearance would be a +, and I think more weight ont he truck will keep it from spinning out.

Witty 07-06-2010 11:17 PM

I locked all the difs, but the front one on the 4WD dosen't lock completely, there's still a bit of play in it... I'm not going to worry about it right now.

I'll try and get better videos in the morning at the park. Gonna go take over the full size pulling strip.

Witty 07-11-2010 08:40 PM

I got my front dogbones for the 4WD and the rear knuckles for my 2WD. Still waiting on my tires and magnets (been 3 weeks...)

GOt a video of the 2WD in the drt with the body. Next time i'll hav a better camera and someone who knws how to run one. Only had phone and my dad (no good wth technology)

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...l/PICT0037.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...11740_xvid.jpg

Sorry for the speed of the video, the program i used to convert it sped it up. I need to find a new converting program

Bananabrain 07-11-2010 09:35 PM

Depending on where you ordered the tires & magnets from it may take awhile. Also did you get a tracking number?

Witty 07-12-2010 11:31 PM

The tires and magnets came in. Im going down to my moms in the morning to pick them up.

How do I go about changing the magnets? I've searched around and haven't found much. If someone could pass me a link, I'd apprciate it. And I'll give you a cookie. :D *holds up cookie*
