- Project: Toyota Hilux Double Cab Scaler -
As many of you know that I bought a Losi micro rock crawler not too long ago, stock out of the box is fun, but tbh its not scale enough. So I ordered a Aoshima Toyota Hilux Double Cab to use it for a scaler project. The kit showed up today. I didn't waste any time, get started on it right away. So far, I have the front axle 90% mounted. I have did many model kit trucks conversion, but this is my first building a scaler, so if any of you have any tips, feel free to share it. Now its time for pics.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1371.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...IMGP1373-1.jpg Change the front axle shocks mounts. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...IMGP1375-1.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...IMGP1376-1.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1377.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1378.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1379.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1380.jpg Chop off part of the front axle, so that the shock can move freely. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1381.jpg !st attempt on the suspension setup. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1383.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1384.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1382.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1385.jpg Imo, this setup doesn't work too well, so I changed it up a little be, I'll get pics on that tomorrow. This is how it sits now. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1386.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1387.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1388.jpg |
OMG a remake of my 1/10 scaler i sold... lol
i cant wait.. im too eager.. just finish it already.. lol |
thats really interesting so you can add a motor to it and make it an rc or is it already an rc?
|
Why so creative guy (: Suspension even looks scale. If this was FB, i would like and unlike 9000 times. Plan on keeping the stock crawler tires? (:

WELCOME! and now for your question It was a Losi Micro-Crawler and he is adding a scale body to it, to make it look better |
are you going to be lowering the truck any further? becuase sitting that high it doesnt look much like a scaler, just a mini monster truck or mudder.

Update: Lowered the ride height a little, also moved the front axle forward, front suspension links mounted. (In the photos, there's no suspension shocks installed on the chassis) http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1411.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1423.jpg This will be the ride height when its done. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1421.jpg Stock front bumper, don't really like the look of it, so they got to go, I will be building a custom one in the future. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1413.jpg Added front fender flares, and since the front axle is moved forward, I had to chop off a bit of the wheel well to clear up the tires from turning. (Fender flares are just a mock up) http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1424.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1425.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1426.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1427.jpg Made room for the tranny to fit in. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1428.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1429.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1430.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1431.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1432.jpg |
oh shiz! its standing on a 1/24 scale 4x1 plank!
lol the reason i love this is cause ur using the chassis from the kit, ive never thought of doing anything like that and do i see alloy nuts already?!?!? |
As said on Scale 4X4, looks fantastic. Much better than my first attempt! Are you planning on doing leafs for it or not?

Update: Was been busy recently, but I got back into it today, got the rear axle mounted on leaf springs. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1434.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1435.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1436.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1437.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1438.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1441.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1445.jpg |
Wow very nice, from the pix it looks like its gunna be a short truck tho. But otherwise everything looks nice
|
OMG. OMG. OMG. OMG. OMG. OMG. OMG. OMG. OMG. Tell me those are the metal clips off a pen. I want, epic scale model! looks too real, i would totally buy it for $900.
|
Looks better every time. How are Paul's tires as far as softness and everything? I was thinking of ordering a set but of the TSL boggers that he did up. Also I'm guessing you did the pull back springs like "B" did on his? Lastly, are you planning on ditching those rear shocks or going to do similar to what he did, also? I'm actually really enjoying your build, I remember going through similar things not too long ago with my build, hopefully you're getting as much enjoyment out of it as I did. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'd be more than happy to help :)

Update: New improved leaf springs mounts. I'm using screws with large threads, and sand down the plate that hold the leaf springs in place, now when it flex, the leaf won't slip out anymore. Also, mounted up the rear shocks, started to work on the rear end, and made front body mounts, using 2 small screws to attach the body to the model chassis. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1446.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1448.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1449.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1450.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1452.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1453.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1456.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1457.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1458.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1455.jpg |
LIKE. LIKE. LIKE> LIKE . So Scale, I would do anything for one of those. Nice work doc.
|
i could imagine chuck norris sitting in there..
nuff said.. its that epic |
That is beyond awesome! Looks really scale, without really trying. How much would it take to make one of these?

Anyway looks better and better each step with it, Doc. Does the axle slide any bit with that setup. Mine slides just a tad bit, with my setup on the rear leafs. What did you and 'B' use for it? I've seen a few use Styrene but I'm curious. |

Update: New improved front suspension, servo mounted, but still need to extend the drive shaft to make it go. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...IMGP1434-1.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...IMGP1435-1.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...IMGP1436-1.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...IMGP1438-1.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1439.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...IMGP1441-1.jpg Mock up of the battery and power switch. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1443.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1447.jpg |
Wow, very nice, how much bump steer does that setup have?
|
Excellent truck! I'm just sketchy that the model base may not hold in certain conditions. Are you going to keep with the model bed, go for a more 'wood bed' thing, or make a custom rear to it?

Update: Got the front drive shaft extended, and the old steering link broke, so I made a new one. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...IMGP1448-1.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...IMGP1449-1.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1451.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...IMGP1458-1.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1459.jpg Also started to plan out where the electric will be placed. I removed the power switch from the ESC case, and glued the power/motor wires under the case to make it looks cleaner. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1460.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1461.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1463.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1464.jpg Cut up the rear seat. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1465.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1466.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1467.jpg I'm planning on making some camping accessories or some kind of cargo to hide the ESC. |
MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE ! :) im so loving this thread i want to see it all done :) i got so much ideas from this! great work!
|
if u ever sell this, make sure to include procedures to cure a feint, and also throw in a waterproof bag, for the person's drool to get into..
and tbh, it reminds me of a 1/10 scale cc01 idk why |

As on Scale 4x4, looks great. Good thing you didn't try the front leafs, its nearly impossible(atleast to me) Does shaving the servo mounting blocks for the rear leafs really make much a difference because one of mine keeps slipping whereas the other is held in good.

Like mycrors4 said, it started off as a Losi Micro Rock Crawler, with a Aoshima Toyota Hilux Double Cab model kit conversion.
Update: Got the grill painted yesterday, took it out for some outdoor pics. Also working on the truggy rear end. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1556.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1559.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1560.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1561.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1564.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1566.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1567.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1568.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1569.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1570.jpg http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...r/IMGP1571.jpg |

You've become an incredible scale builder, and I love seeing your stuff. One thing that keeps making the trip to XMS worth coming. |
